It is quit easy fuse is having a small metalic wire in it ok..... and as you know when current increases then heating effect of current comes to the picture. As fuse in series so both that appliances and fuse both face same amount of current and when more current comes in to the picture then that fuse got heated up due to more current then that wife melt fuse shorted and that circuit become open and the current does not move forward by which the appliances become save from over current.

Disadvantages of series circuits An open in any one device will also interrupt current flow to all remaining devices. A short in one device will cause an increase in current through all the devices.
