The problem here is the order of operations. In Python, division and multiplication have the same precedence and are evaluated left to right. So / 2*a is equivalent to (/ 2) * a, which is not what we want for the quadratic formula. Correction: E = (-b + (D**0.5)) / (2*a) F = (-b - (D**0.5)) / (2*a)
