+Yash Agarwal its a limiting value when electrons will just be able to come out of surface. if surface is not grounded, due to positive charge these will be re absorbed...

Can each electron absorb only one photon/one quanta of energy??? Can't it absorb 2-3 photons to reach it's threshold value?

​@@p.ramyashri4110 Hi, The answer to your query is very logical and can be understood well through an analogy. Consider a metal bar, you can heat the metal as many as times and as long as possible but it won't melt, until its melting point is reached through heat supply, even though in the former case the heat supply might have been much more than in the latter case. This is because the heat supplied is not important but the reaching of melting point is the criteria. This again can be attributed to the fact that temperature is not additive in nature even though heat is. Similarly frequencies are not additive in nature and you cannot a particular frequency by providing an energy( photon) more than once or for a long time. To cause an emission, the frequency must be greater than or equal to the threshold frequency. In case its equal to the threshold frequency, the electron from a conduction bands will just reach the metal surface and would be absorbed by the metal lattice soon if the metal surface is not grounded.

Another analogy can be ignition of a matchstick where the match would not light however much heat you provide to it unless the ignition temperature is reached even though the heat supplied to the system in in reaching the temperature might as well be lower then the net heat is supplied at lower temperature.
