I like the look - reminds a bit of old QR railbuses on the rural Queensland lines, and essentially it's a modern take on the same concept. I think the problem with it is that aiming it at the national rail branch line market was probably misreading the market. Traffic on branch lines is too high these days - the PPMs would be instatnly swamped. However, as a low cost tram-train in urban use, it makes a lot of sense, especially as urban transport funding outside of London is non-existent. They also didn't target the developing world. I could see these being popular for cities in central/south America and much of sub-saharanAfrica where the public rail networks exist but are badly neglected, but cities are expanding but can't get funding for full metro systems.

This concept was suggested by Harry Ferguson in the 50s as a way of keeping uneconomic branch lines open. In addition to the scheduled stations, there would also be request stops. A great idea that failed to find support from the vested interests in the railway hierarchy. Shame that it took 70 years for someone to see the logic of his ideas.

While I'm glad these are useful and still running, that design is just UGLY! It looks like something someone would make for a very badly designed urban fantasy movie or some kind of weird Tim Burton film cause it looks like they took two busses, chopped off the front with the first 2-3 rows of seats, and smacked them on a truck chassis.
