This Adventure was Tough for me, although the steep approach up to the Coffee pot and short subsequent class 5 climb to its summit went very smoothly, the ensuing ridge traverse to Potosi was a very loose tedious side hill slog. The traverse around the summit of Potosi was more of the same. Following a faint trail sent me past the prescribed ascent route on the SW ridge and on to Potosi's east ridge where I improvised a route back west on a ledge system to reunite with the standard route's upper gullies. That traverse and the continuation of the standard route also proved to be very loose, soft, and steep, real energy sappers with few options to side step it and climb steeper more solid rock.
I did find and use the standard route for my descent. Then the traversing descent from the Potosi/Coffee Pot saddle, West toward my ascent route was more of the same, only for me, terminating in a maze of deep steep loose canyons forcing me to climb back up several 100' in order to "Safely" move west onto safer ground and a survivable descent. . . I must have descended too quickly. . . The final descent around the lower canyon/gully system was undoubtably the most dangerous part of the climb for me. . . despite expending extra energy to traverse west to where I thought I would be clear of the Canyons. . . Climb this route at your own risk, not recommended by me, but, to be fair, I made a few mistakes. . .
DISCLAIMER: The Expedition(s) documented on this channel are for entertainment purposes only, NOT FOR Explicit Instruction or Route Execution. I have had MANY NEAR DEATH experiences and a couple serious accidents over 30 years of Backcountry adventures, the RISKS are very REAL. As always, hike, bike and climb at your own risk. Know Your LIMITS and stay within them if you expect to avoid any accidents. even then. . .

Another wonderful story put together so well. An old memory on Petosi; Back in the late '80's when I scampered across the ridge to Petosi, I opened the register to find that it had been placed on my birthday in the '50's!! My time continuum was shaken up a bit as I tried to comprehend that while I was being born way back east, someone was placing this register on this remote Colorado mountain when few climbers were out there. And there I was holding it in my hands. Another great presentation capturing the experience. Thank you.

The whole Google Earth setup, location pins, integration with the drone shots, is crazy time consuming! But it gives me satisfaction and I have gotten positive feedback from you guys, so makes it worth it... thanks again for your support 👍👍, Karl

My god my insides are still aching watching you route find in all that exceptionally steep scree field or worse crumbly crud that is dangerous as hell, at least for me. You seem to live through it, but I could never. I love the yankee boy basin soooooo damn beautiful! Thanks for the adventure and living through it!

11:58 that couloir looks phenomenal, but I see what you mean about it this time of year, the exposed rocks make it untenable, you'd want a good snow pack. Congrats on another summit, it appears to be as I was envisioning--the most treacherous class 2 around.

Did Potosi and the base of Teakettle. Most mountains I think a return would be fun. And others I don't know why I was up there'...this stupd list of the top 50 San Juans.But I ain't going back....my hatred for that ridge is only exceeded by the pair of goldens who demostrated much loyalty and no intelligence by following me.

What part of Colorado Rockies has less loose grave and more stable trails to summits?
@KarlDeckerPresents
@KarlDeckerPresents 9 ай бұрын
So there are always geological exceptions, but I would stay away from the San Juans. I suggest you pick a couple hikes close to you and research the trail conditions carefully. There are superb websites devoted to you knowing trail conditions before you decide.
