i was always use to the DC sound of the class 700 since i live in the south, although i never knew that when using Overhead wires it Sounds completely different, I've been to St Pancras station traveling on one i have no idea how i haven't noticed that.

Class 700 has a quicker acceleration on AC 25kv than DC 750v DC top contact third rail. Same way for the Thameslink Govia Southern 377/2 377/5 377/7 387/1 & 387/2 electrostar fleet AC OHLE quick acceleration but slower acceleration on DC Third Rail. If you come here to NEC New York New Haven it's American equivalent the Metro-North M8 has the same OHLE quick acceleration but slow acceleration DC 750V Third Rail
@samuelitooooo2 жыл бұрын
As a New Yorker, I'd like to dispute this. M7s and M9s, which are third-rail only, accelerate at the same rate as M8s. I have a spec sheet that lists the M7's acceleration at 0.9 m/s². The New York City Subway, entirely third rail, accelerates even faster at 1.11 m/s².
@edot_nyc Жыл бұрын
@@samuelitooooo Incorrect. While they both have the same posted acceleration rate, that does not mean one train is not faster than the other. This is true to many trains in the nyc subway. They all have an acceleration rate of 2.5mph/ps, however it’s well known that a train like the R160 type is faster than the older R46 type.
@edot_nyc Жыл бұрын
@@samuelitooooo The MTA also conducted a test during the testing phases of the M8’s back in 2013. They found that when the train was running on AC power it was accelerating faster.

I have two questions 1. Why is overhead power not used inside of London instead of the third rail? 2. Why is there a sound difference between AC And DC?
@LondonTransportMaster Жыл бұрын
3rd rail in London is only used on Southern, South Western and South Eastern regions, aswell as the East/South/West London Lines, part of the North London Line and the Northern City line. All other railways into London (with the exception of the (Chiltern Mainline) use OHLE
@InverhavonRailways Жыл бұрын
Third rail was used on the Southern Region simply because it was cheaper. Early experiments were done with AC,but were abandoned in favour of 3rd rail.
@scl190 Жыл бұрын
I think it’s different because the 700 runs on AC and the third rail picks up DC, so it has a transformer rectifier on board to rectify the difference (in very very basic terms) so that’s the difference in sound, that could be completely wrong though

So do all DC enabled trains have AC motors, or do the ones that are 3rd rail only have DC motors? I'm assuming former because that DC sound of the 700 is similar to that of say a 450
@CrashCoreBeamNG2 жыл бұрын
Depends. Look at the Wikipedia for said train and check the motor or something
@NCHLT2 жыл бұрын
No. Many older trains have DC motors
@spongebot64 Жыл бұрын
It's more so that any train past the 80s/90s is bound to use AC motors due to being more powerful and efficient than DC motors. Whether or not it gets its power from AC/DC doesn't matter; aside from lower power capacity on DC, trains are able to take whatever power source (within their design) and use it for their needs.
@isaacfoster2820 Жыл бұрын
@@spongebot64 does ac trains use full capacity though cos it would go really fast
@congrelmunt87699 ай бұрын
@isaacfoster2820 no. The inverters that control the AC motors are powered by 750V DC only. So when class700 are using 25kv, it is rectified to suit the 750dc inverters

The motors are all 3 phase AC, but that AC is produced on the train in electronic devices known as traction converters. The variable switching frequencies used in the converters are set up to cause minimum interference to other trackside equipment. They are set differently dependent on the presence of other lineside equipment such as signalling.
