Remember buying a record, peeling off the wrapping, taking the sleeve out, removing the vinyl (only touch the edges!), gently placing on turntable, dusting off with static brush and placing stylus in groove? THEN, sit in chair placed perfectly between speakers, and listen. Loud! While reading liner notes. Perfection. A new record was an event.

I totally enjoyed this discussion. The reason the music in the sixties was so good is because all the artist from Dylan, to the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Zeppelin etc. studied and knew about the great music that came before. They also read the greats poets and writers. This is a wonderful talk for the present generation to get exposed and educated about the great artist from the prior generation. You are doing a public service. Make this a monthly discussion. I bet your local PBS station would do a monthly program where you discuss the great albums and artist. You could even invite other players or critics. It would be a wonderful way to expose the masterpieces from the prior generations. You might call it, Musical Masterpieces with Rick Beato and friends.

The Beatles albums (scouser here), my favourite album by them, has constantly shifted over the decades. But "Abbey Road" I think has come out on top. It's the most raw, honest, and clinical of all their albums. They all sound tired of each other, the scene, and yet.. they know.. they still have more to give, but totally burnt-out and exhausted. Revolver.. yeah it's in the top 3, and very evident the group, had found a lot of..ermm..stimulus..

Incidentally, the great jazz recording engineer/technologist Rudy Van Gelder had a hidden, nonchalant studio in Englewood Cliffs, NJ, and when I was growing up there, we used to drive by all the time for decades, not knowing the historic significance of the place. We're talking overgrown bushes outside, cracks in the parking lot, etc. Of course, years later when moved out of state, and got into Jazz, I found out about RVG, and his historic Jersey studio, where many of the great, timeless Jazz recordings were made! I had no idea! As they say, "hindsight is truly 20/20".

Right after getting a slice at Joe's Pizza, back in 91, me and my streetsmart NYC buddy snuck by the front door girl at The Vanguard and went in. It was Branford Marsalis, Kenny Kirkland?, Tain and others. Basically The Tonight Show band right before they got hired. They improvised and blew uptempo for two hours straight. Warp 22. No break. We were sitting 3 feet away HH side of Tain. (I did that later with Keith Carlock at the 55 Bar starting in 97 when he started playing with Wayne Krantz). It's something I'll never forget, that Vanguard night. I Talked to Tain after about uptempo ride technique - being a drummer myself.

Rick Beato, I love how you make the 70, 80, 90, alive again. You really should write a book with your adventures with people from the music industry during the good old days.

I've come to enjoy how flute playing really adds something to an ensemble. Some examples: George Benson in Concert Carnegie Hall with Hubert Laws ; Loggins and Messina On Stage ; Traffic Low Spark of High Heeled Boy. I'll listen to all the stuff on your list Rick. Thanks

Wow, I'm stunned - I actually own about 10% of those records! And I have my own Lyle Mays story (though not as good as Rick's) - We were at a Chick Corea concert in the Boston Commons and Lyle was sitting a few rows ahead of us. During intermission I approached him and we had a nice conversation about computers and music (MIDI was *just* becoming a thing back then). See - told you it wasn't as good as Rick's!

Ah, those classic early 70’s fusion jazz records - Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek, Pat Metheny, Miles Davis, Weather Report...reminds me of skipping class in high school and going to the bandroom to listen to jazz records

Love this stream.... reminds me of the old days on that other channel we dont talk about. I adore Weather Reports Heavy Weather album.... the song "A remark you made" is absolutly stunning.. no lyrics but there is a conversation going on, its like a break up song. You can hear the back and forth .. the sax is the pleading to keep gping.. then the reply bass in denial, yey trying to be soothing.Nobody writes like that anymore

If you only ever own ONE Elton John record, it's that 'Greatest Hits I' album that Rick just killed the secret on! 😀 The copy you need is the UK translucent red from the 70's on vinyl, which is still grossly (luckily for us all) under-priced, and sounds phenomenal.

It's crazy Rick, at least 3 quarters of those records are what I had when I was in college. I remember my roommates would come in and rifle thru my collection and say, "who the hell are these guys?"

One of the main reasons that Native Dancer By Wayne Shorter is so great Is that it features the Brazilian singer Milton Nascimento and many of his songs. It was an album that introduced many Americans to Brazilan music, and Nascimento in particular. For example the great song Ponta de Areia on the album is composed and sung by Nasciemento.

Rick did you know Cityscape by Claus Ogerman and Michael Brecker was Allan Holdsworth’s favourite record, he said the arrangements made him cry. I remember him saying this in an interview. So beautiful.

I'm a Montrealer and currently there is talk of renaming one of the Metro stations to Oscar Peterson (born and raised in Montreal) station because this station is currently named after one of our historical figures who... it turns out was ALSO a known anti-semite.... I'd be all for it.

Fairport Convention's Liege and Lief is an album every person on the planet should own. Even if they don't have a device to play it... they can just sit and look at it and enrich their appreciation of music. It's really that good. The Doors' first album and Pink Floyd's the Wall should also be on everyone's list. I'd also argue for Gang of Four's Entertainment and either of Joy Division's studio albums, but they may not be to all rock fans' taste.

Totally agree! You have got to feel for Alfonso a little as he was overshadowed by Jaco but was revolutionary in his own right, and has had a stellar career. I also love the work he did with Flora Purim when George Duke basically put her backing band together. And of course he was on the maestro Allan Holdsworth’s Velvet Darkness.

Thats a great music collection you have Rick. I knew most of them, jazz music but they never make me more excited than some rock bands from the 70s and 80s. I could learn a lot guitar playing from these Bands with cities name, in this order: Boston/Kansas/Chicago and other bands like Steve Miller, Wings, LRB, Genesis, Journey, Queen and Pink Floyd and jazz was only remembered sometimes by listening Dixie Dregs, Larry Carlton, Brecker Bros and something very rare called Don Ellis (Montreux 1974? the whole concert is live in youtube). Of course I listened Beatles, bossa from Jobin or Gilberto and Frank Sinatra/Dorsey era. Later in my life I still enjoy all that music but classical finally got most of my fingers time, conderts and teaching . Metal is ok but not as those amazing sound pioneers and beyond this earth creators. Your Dad was an extraordinary man. Blessings.

Thanks for acknowledging the genius of Jobin and Claus Ogerman. I discovered them via Diana Krall’s work and have been chasing down their expectations albums for the last 15 years.
