The Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer was a British STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) transport aircraft designed and built at Prestwick, on the West Coast of Scotland. Conceived to serve both military and civil operations, the aircraft could operate in an area of just 30 meters x 275 metres.

I had a wonderful first tour as a navigator on 209 Sqn Seletar ‘strip bashing’ around Malaya and Borneo in 1966. As a 21 yr old it was a most character making 3 years. I subsequently re-trod as a pilot for the next 40 yrs or so.

I was a kid at RAF Seletar 1967-1969 I saw Twin pioneers, single pioneers, Andovers, Beverly's, Argosys, Belvedere helicopters...what a great time for a 9 year old boy.

I lived at Seletar 64-67 and remember the Twin Pins of 209 sqn. I even flew in one when we were in Aden, Dhala to Khormaksar, 1962. Wonderful aircraft. When I started work, I joined Scottish Aviation 74-76 but left after nationalisation and the formation of BAe.

As a 10 year old in 1961my father (who was serving with the 5th battalion Kings African Rifles in Nairobi) arranged for us to be shown around a Twin Pioneer by one of the pilots at Ambekasi Airport (now Jomo Kenyatta Airport). With my head full of second world war stories in the comics of the time I noticed there was no rear view mirror for the pilot and asked why. It was patiently explained that only fighter aircraft like Spitfires and Hurricanes needed them.

Must have been quite an experience. I've always felt it doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

There was two David McKintyre's employed at Scottish Aviation. There is Wing Commander David F. McKintyre who flew over Mount Everest in 1933 & who created the Company Scottish Aviation and there was also a David McKintyre who designed both the Prestwick Pioneer & the Prestwick Twin Pioneer. I am surprised that the David McKintyre who designed these aircraft was not mentioned in this video

We used to have one flying around SW Sydney occasionally up until about 2010 ( ran out of spare parts to keep it up ) and another at Bankstown airport waiting to be restored

Sadly that's a common story with old aircraft.

Did they ever fit larger wheels to the pioneers? I would have thought that soft lumpy strips Would have made it a bit tricky on small wheels.
