Growing up, my mom had a couple of those big ass DC Treasury Editions of Captain Marvel and I would read and re-read them constantly. They were so fun and imaginative. Really wish that DC did a better job collecting Golden Age Captain Marvel these days, especially considering how well the movie did

DC was going to publish a collection but backed out due to racial sensitivity concerns. It pisses me off because DC is willing to republish golden age batman superman wonder woman ect comics with un PC racial cartooning but not captain marvel.

Perfect timing, I just finished watching Elvis, guy was a Captain Marvel Jr. fanatic! And the movie uses it very well! CC Beck is a huge Jaime Hernandez influence in my humble opinion.

Hay, I am totally digging your deep dives into these old Captain Marvel stories. This one is possibly the greatest superhero story ever told. One nit-pick: When DC sued Fawcett, they didn't put Fawcett out of business. Fawcett was a large, diverse, and successful magazine publisher. They simply shut down their comics division in 1953 when comic sales, especially superheroes, were dropping and fighting the lawsuit was getting expensive. DC didn't get anything in the deal but $400,000 and one fewer competitors. They didn't license the characters until 1972. They did hire people like Binder and Schaffenberger, though. For them, a job was a job. It is interesting to s[peculate how much of what Binder did with the world of Superman he might have done with the Marvel Family.

Fun fact I learned from Alex Ross was that Jack Kirby was instrumental in getting DC to license out Captain Marvel from Facwett in the 70s. Those 70s Shazam issues are pretty cheap at LCS and on ebay and have one new story drawn by CC beck along with a golden age reprint.

Loved Tom insights about those pages being sort of a crossing between funny comics and adventure comics. And then Ed mentions the polka dot eyes. Excelent analysis!

Grant Morrison wrote a Captain Marvel one-shot, New Thunderworld Adventures that has clever, whimsical story-telling, and an alternate-reality Red Room version of Doctor Sivana!

As soon as you pulled that Smithsonian book out I started to tear up I had that book but lost it during a drunken episode forty years ago. I'm a big fan of The World's Mightiest Mortal and DC Comics has done the entire Fawcett characters dirty. One comic book series you should look up is Zot! it Is a fun read and harks back to that Captain Marvel era.

When I was in my late teens,DC first revived Captain Marvel in the comic book SHAZAM.This was 1972. I read a lot about the Godlen Age Captain Marvel in articles by people like Dick Lupoff or Jim Steranko. For years I colleced older Captain Marvel isuues and have a lot of regard for the Golden Age Captain Marvel. I admire DC for continuing it,although the return only lasted ten years. Now I have nothing to do with any,"Shazam,"features DC put out.

Captain Marvel versus the monster society of evil is the best serial in the original run. Covering twenty two issues I believe and I am pretty sure it has been collected in a reprint volume.

While I am thankful for Captain Marvel Golden Age reprints being constantly available as a kid, right along with his newest series (DC) and occassional team-ups (and live action and a fee years later the cartoon, I think that DC sort of shot itself in the foot because not even with Shauffenberger still doing the art, the newer stuff just could not hold a candle to these Fawcett works.

I’m no Pogo authority but if you fellas do decide to put him under the camera in the future, you can’t go wrong with the 3rd volume of Fantagraphics’ current hardcover reprints, with that famous Joe McCarthy/Simple J Malarkey storyline. I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on those strips!

What stunning, ingenius comic book. It's rare nowadays to witness such a deep exploitation of the medium.
