1955 - Smack bang in the golden era of rock and roll, came a car that helped define the period. While Elvis’ hip-thrusted his way to stardom, the Karmann Ghia turned heads thanks to its low-slung coupe lines, sporty stance and rear-engine layout.
The product of an Italian design house (Ghia) and a German coachbuilding firm’s (Karmann) take on a VW Beetle, this stylish machine was an instant hit. It was so popular it had a production run of almost 19 years virtually unchanged. To this day, the sight of a Karmann Ghia on Sri Lanka’s roads garners looks of adoration.
The car featured in this week’s episode has been cruising local motorways for over 60 years. And as the current owner explains, getting his hands on it was the fulfillment of a lifelong passion.
