Classic Car Diaries: The Unassuming 500E

Quiet, unassuming and but packs a serious punch, introducing the Mercedes Benz 500E. To the untrained eye this is a standard 80’s Mercedes Benz E Class, look a little closer however and you will notice the slightly flared wheel arches, the more menacing stance and the 500E badge on the boot, only then do you start to realise that this is something special.
This particular car is the only one in Sri Lanka and has been resurrected by an avid car enthusiast, and thankfully so. With its 5ltr V8, automatic gearbox and saloon car styling, this could be termed as the ultimate sleeper. How it came to being is a fascinating story with links to motorsports and an unlikely collaboration with another German automotive giant.

Haha, yes, those are the BEST cars! The "Q Ship" that looks very much like a standard model, but gives you the confidence and authority to drive with proper assertion! These were the last of the best Mercedes-Benz cars, in my opinion. Built to a standard (not a price), exceptionally durable with proper care, and smart, dignified styling with the hood ornament (what ever happened to that styling element?????), and none of the fussy electric fatures and "infotainment" nonsense (are you driving, or are you there for "infotainment") This is the type of car I would buy new and then keep forever....just timeless. A tip of the hat to another Classic Car Club of Ceylon owner and vehicle. Thanks for sharing.

Is this identical to 190E?

Nah much different.. 190E was a W201 C class with a 4 cyl.. This was a 5L v8 (M119) in a W124 E class chassis.
