Thanks very much for this. Mistress Masham's Repose is a fantastic hidden gem, one of my life-long favorites. I continue to give Edward Eager's books to children (and the occasional adult), starting of course with Half Magic. I do differ with you in your comparison of Eager's books and the Narnia series. I see one of the greatest things about Eager (inspired by Nesbitt) is that he brings magic into the everyday world. Yes, there are forays into other worlds - Knight's Castle is largely there - but where I think he excelled is in pulling that touch of magic into his kids' pragmatic lives, which makes the magic seem more magical, not less. Also, of course, his best adults take children as they are, neither talking down to them nor pretending they're grown up. It's a wonderful distinction expressed so perfectly in Half Magic. Anyway, thanks again.
@JuniperPaul
@JuniperPaul 2 жыл бұрын
PS: I think it's useful to list the Eager books in chronological order because there is a continuity, for example when the kids in one book are the parents of the kids in the next (one of the things I love about many of Madeleine L'Engle's books, especially the Austin family series). It effectively introduces the idea that your parents were once children themselves, and may have had magical experiences of their own. Half Magic (1954) Knight's Castle (1956) Magic by the Lake (1957) The Time Garden (1958) Magic or Not? (1959) The Well-Wishers (1960) Seven-Day Magic (1962) Also, forgive me for being picky, but these seven books are NOT all that Eager wrote (they're just my favorites!). See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Eager for a more complete bibliography.

@@LuminousLibro oh, you're a teacher? Awesome. In previous times I would've just said "hmm, makes sense" & move on, but now, you actually stand apart from all (well, most of) the teachers I've known & been aware of, in that you presented books based on MERIT, based on the author's TALENT, as opposed to the author's skin color or who they have sex with. It sounds so stupid when I think of it like that, but that's exactly what's happening, in the entirety of the Western world, & it has to stop or the next gen of kids is gonna be the dumbest in modern history. Again, thank you.

Wow! What a fantastic channel and video. For me, the greatest unsung children's book of all time is Michael Ende's Momo. It has both the greatest hero and the greatest villain and to top it off a great sidekick in Cassiopea a turtle who can see I think 5 minutes into the future.

Apparently I've read the mentioned rather than not mentioned Nesbit books. I love the 5 children trilogy, which I read not knowing it was a trilogy and started with book three, but apparently reading them backwards wasn't a problem. My personal favorite is The Little Prince. ...and my tbr list just grew. Thanks for all your recommendations.

+Mo's Reads Thanks! I also read the 5 Children trilogy out of order. I read book 2, then books 1 and 3. haha! I adore all of Edith Nesbit's books, and still reread them all the time. I never liked the Little Prince, because it seems so nonsensical. The same reason why I don't like Alice in Wonderland much. I mean, it's still good, but not my fave.

@@LuminousLibro I don’t feel so alone in my dislike for the little prince anymore, I’m not sure if you still feel the same about it anyway but my opinions are the same also for Alice in Wonderland. Well, first off, I'm a huge fan of the Oz books; pretty much that entire series is worth reading - but they're also reasonably well-known. So here are a few (and only a few) of the slightly more obscure but worthwhile classics I own and would recommend: 'The Twenty-One Balloons', by William Pene du Bois. 'The Wind on the Moon', by Eric Linklater. 'Uncle' and 'Uncle Cleans Up', by J.P Martin. (These are the first two in the series, and the only ones I've read, but there are several more - gloriously chaotic fun.) The 'Swallows and Amazons' books, by Arthur Ransome. (Again, I have yet to finish them, but so far I'd say the first three - 'Swallows and Amazons', 'Swallowdale', and 'Peter Duck', are probably the best, along with the fifth one, 'Coot Club'.) 'The Wonderful Flight to the Mushroom Planet', by Eleanor Cameron. (There are sequels, but I'm only hazily familiar with them.) 'The 13 Clocks' and 'The Wonderful O', by James Thurber. 'Wanted - A King', by Maggie Browne. (I have this as part of an anthology - I'm not sure if it's been printed on its own in recent years. Still, worth seeking out.) 'Bill the Minder', by W. Heath Robinson. 'Emil and the Detectives', by Erich Kastner. 'The Song of Seven', by Tonke Dragt. The 'Famous Five' and 'Adventure' series, by Enid Blyton. Just about anything by John Bellairs.

At the Back of the North Wind is well known, but there are other books by George MacDonald which are just as intriguing if you enjoy vintage fairy tales. The Princess and Curdie, The Princess and the Goblin, The Golden Key, and The Lost Princess are some of his best. The Light Princess is a fine short story. If you love children's stories that are old fashioned (from the 19th century) all of these are excellent choices. I often prefer them over modern literature. :)

Hooray for classic children's books! It's strange because for me, 5 children and It and The Phoenix and the Carpet are two E. Nesbit books that I'm most familiar with. There was a BBC series that aired when I was I child, and that got me in to the books (Granted, I had already read The Railway Children). Remembering it now, I swear The Phoenix and the Carpet was the best TV series ever...might have to see if I can track it down, though I don't want to be disappointed watching it through grown up eyes!

+A Hermit's Progress Yeah, it's funny with Nesbit, b/c some people have never heard of Railway Children, and others think it's very well-known. I didn't know that Phoenix and the Carpet had a TV series! Now I'll have to watch it. Let me know where you find it.. Netflix or Hulu or wherever.

One of my absolute favorite books from my childhood is called " The Curious Adventures of Tabby" by E.H. Lang. It's not a classic. I don't know if most people have ever heard of it. It was in my little WV county library when I was a child way back in the 80's. I found it on Amazon about 10 years ago and I still like it :)

Although I've read it in English, French, and Spanish, I never liked the Little Prince very much, maybe because it has too much of a Wonderland nonsense about it, and I've always had a rocky relationship with Alice. Too much craziness, and not enough structure. So many people say it's their favorite book though! I'm glad you enjoy it!

I would throw the Moomintroll books by Tove Jansson into the mix. The Comet over Moominvalley is chronologically the earliest and introduces many key characters. Or you could start with The Tales from Moominvalley, which is a collection of short stories - some involving the Moomin family and some not - that set up the scope of this world while delighting the soul! :)
