YES YES YES, THAT IS MUSIC TO MY EARS. THE KNICKS OF THE EARLY 70's WERE SOMETHING TO BEHOLD AND CLYDE AND PEARL WERE THE GREATEST BACKCOURT DUO AT THE TIME. I DO REMEMBER IN '72,73 THE LAKERS HAD GAIL GOODRICH/JERRY WEST THAT WAS TOUTED AS BEST BACKCOURT,... YEAH RIGHT !! THEN CLYDE, PEARL SHOWED UP IN THE FINALS AND BABY THE TRUTH ALWAYS RISES TO THE TOP. YOU JUST HAD TO BE THERE, IT WAS AWESOME, AND WORTHY OF ME USING ALL CAPS !!! FRAZIER AND MONROE AND THE KNICKS PLAYED GREAT BASKETBALL AND TOOK THE LAKERS APART.

@Gnofg
@Gnofg 2 жыл бұрын
Funny you say that. I was over on another video on Pete Maravich and all anyone could say was that he was the greatest. Earl was much more dominant and better player in all aspects of the game. People only see Pete's highlights but don't realize that no GM wanted him because he played losing basketball. Earl had the greatest moves.
@bobby33x97
@bobby33x97 2 жыл бұрын
@@Gnofg Even Earl would tell you Maravich was a better player. Maravich was a better Ball-Handler, Passer, long range shooter. Earl was lucky he played on some very good teams w/HoFers Wes Unseld, who had the best outlet passing this side of Bill Walton & Gus Johnson, possibly the Best Per Forward ever! Who did Maravich have as teammates? Prosecution rests!

@@bobby33x97 I started watching the NBVA in 1965 and have not missed a final since then. I remember Chris Shenkel and Jack Twyman doing the sunday weekly game. I saw Russell and Wilt many times and Russell's tutorial on boxing out is something I used the rest of my playing days. People said I was the best little rebounder they ever played against. I saw Texas Western beat Kentucky with pat Riley. Pat Riley played against Pete. he knows him well and is a pretty good judge on winning basketball. Pete had a ton of skills. The one component he was ;lacking was the sacrifice one needs to win. No GM wanted him because he was all about Pete. His father did him a disservice by letting him shoot so much. He took 50% of the LSU shots and I did watch him at LSU. Earl continued to grow and kept getting better and was willing to sacrifice for the good of the team. Pete plateaued and was a terrible defensive player. No GM wanted him because he was viewed as selfish and a malcontent. There is more to basketball than your repertoire. You have to want to win.

@tellthetruthg Good points. However, I don't think Kidd measures up to Clyde in the shooting department. Clyde was a pinpoint shooter from all angles. I think that Kidd may drive to the net a little better than Clyde did. They were both excellent passers and leaders. However, Clyde was All - Defense nearly every year. He usually also had a boat load of steals as well. Good discussion.

Do you suppose the reason why the Knicks got Earl “The Pearl” Monroe was from Monroe’s Baltimore Bullets knocking them out of the Playoffs in 1971?

The rumor mill was spinning out of control when Earl was traded to the Knicks. With Willis Reed continuously getting hurt because of his rugged style of play, it was believed that Clyde was going to be traded to the Rockets for Elvin Hayes. It's a good thing that it didn't happen. The Knicks needed both Frazier & Monroe because Pearl had bone spurs in his feet. He needed an operation, but Red Holzman convinced Earl that he could cause havoc even with the spurs. So the Knicks instead traded Cazzie Russell to the Warriors I think [or Royals] for Jerry Lucas, and speeded up their offense.

for todays kids seeing this Walt & Earl being on the same team is like Wade and lebron teaming up the difference is they were forced together and 2 they actually won a ring . They are two OG's that their game would still start in this era's NBA and would give fits to the talent in todays NBA. The Pearl couldn't jump it seemed more than 20" but hung in the air like he leaped 40" . Clyde would lead the NBA in steals every yr. Ask Jerry west. Plus he could shoot and was as unselfish as J Kidd
@Dave897456

@tellthetruthg Sorry if you are disappointed in my reply. However, J Kidd was arrested in January 2001 and he pleaded guilty to domestic abuse charge. You can check J Kidd's Wikipedia page for details. His wife also later claimed that he broke her rib during the divorce proceedings. I am not sure if the last claim was true. I remember that he sat out a game when he was on the Nets during contract negotiations - due to a headache. Everybody knew it was BS that he was just being a baby.

@Dave897456 I'm disappointed in the wife beater a hole comment. First you truly don't know what was going on in their home, he wasn't arrested that I know of. I think he was accused of slapping his wife and under any circumstance it isn't excusable. But I can understand. A wife beater is over the top someone that is out of control wanting to control. One incident his Ex accused him of is not fair to call him a wife beater. Nobody is perfect. Too bad you went their. we were cool until then.

@Dave897456 check out BBall ref Kidd was 1rst or second team all D from 99 until 2007 easily the all time highest leading PG rebounder in NBA history . Clyde wasn't just a better shooter he was a way better shooter. You have to go to Bball reference to compare the two. Kidd has all the stats over him but Clyde will always be a favorite of mine. You can never compare eras. You have to compare how dominant someone was in their era. You can say that about any sport. Would babe Ruth be dominant today? Would the Green bay Packers of the sixties be able to compete today? . That is how you evaluate players. The question worth discussing is whether the game we see today is better basketball and I say no. I think we see way too much dribbling today by the likes of James, Hardin etc.
