I think this was Classic Coronation Street March 13th 1985...not Classic Coronation Street March 12th 1985.

Where did they dig up the barman Wilf from? 1985 seemed to mark a decline for the street. They'd lost Elsie Tanner,Albert Tatlock, Annie Walker, Stan Ogden and Fred Gee on top of losing Eddie Yeats and Len Fairclough prior to that; and who did they replace them with? Wilf? The Claytons (though I did fancy Jane Hazelgrove back in the day) Percy Sugden? Martin Platt? Jack and Vera Duckworth had their moments but they weren't a patch on Stan and Hilda. I could never get use to Bet as landlady either. She was great as a barmaid but needed an authority figure Like Annie walker over her. 1985 was also the year that show started on the BBC and then the street allowed that cockney crap to set the agenda. So loads more teenagers, unrealistic stories, dysfunctional families and less humour came to be the norm..

Great post and I think you're spot on - Elsie's departure was the final nail in the coffin for the show. The Claytons were a big flop, Percy has yet to get into his stride, ditto Curley and what was the point of Wilf?!!
