When this game originally came out it was so bug-ridden that a lot of people wrote it off and forgot about it, which is a shame because it was really groundbreaking, and once they got the bugs squashed it was a real gem. That poor launch is probably a big part of why it never got a sequel which, again, was a real shame.

I played this game so much in the late '90s. I believe you are correct about combat: this is the first RT with pause RPG that I ever saw and couldn't find an earlier example. It makes the game feels retro-modern at this point, which is perfect.

The part about invoking St. Christopher led me on a frenetic wiki-hopping marathon which ended with me learning about an open query in hagiography that studies the possible pagan origins of folk saints, as well as what the word ‘hagiography’ means. Apparently I had it already starred in my dictionary app a few years ago, so I’m convinced this knowledge was well worth the half hour or so of my life this round of autism cost me.

Darklands was actually the first game where I learned about all the various names of medieval weapons and armor ( Saints too), not to mention interesting German words like Raubritter. Wish someone would create a similar game without some of its flaws (so much grinding and random forest wandering…). I actually loved the combat and the multi-level dungeons. It had just the right amount of historical context mixed with the supernatural.
@CairnEnjoyer
@CairnEnjoyer Ай бұрын
I appreciate the attention to detail in a realistic historical setting as well. I wish more games would go this route as opposed to generic fantasy or some bizarre world. The real world is plenty interesting and you can just inject a small amount of fantasy into an otherwise historical setting to make it more “gamey”

If I remember correctly, it is also good to raise Charisma and Intelligence for the religious parts. Since it has to do with a lot of speaking with high position characters, people and invoke the blessings of the gods. If you raise your favour (Like donating money when can, to the churches and such.) they will open up more. Though this is just from memory, it has been god knows how long since I played last, I barely remember the game. So anecdotal going so I can be 100% wrong on it. Also I do believe you can travel to other towns/cities, to learn more gods. And I would like to see some more Darkland videos. Even with the grind, it gives you just something to watch or just listen too while doing something on the side.

I really like how it doesn't preachy and patronizing. It is just a normal game with Catholicism being taken into consideration.
@CairnEnjoyer
@CairnEnjoyer Ай бұрын
It's not explicitly a christian game or anything, but it seeks to portray a somewhat realistic medieval society, and that obviously includes a sincere portrayal of Christian society. I find it odd personally when you have a game ostensibly set in the middle ages or something, yet all the characters are jaded modern liberals who just have cynical takes about everything around them.

@@CairnEnjoyer While I have a guilty pleasure for those settings, I really love the fact that this game is just a straight up good vs evil story with the twist being that it has fantastical/horror elements in it. @@kloa4219 It's the kind of game that would have immense potential with a remake. Unambiguous settings are refreshing sometimes, and seeing something paranormal in this game is pretty shocking when for nearly the entire early game you've been fighting bandits and robber barons.

Is this game balanced in such a way that only this strategy works or are other weapon types feasible? What would happen if you gave the character in the back a polearm?
@CairnEnjoyer
@CairnEnjoyer Ай бұрын
Just Impact and Edged are the best weapons available, especially impact is generally the best as it penetrates armour and has a fast attack speed. Edged is better late game when you have high alchemy to improve them, but blunt is always good. issue with polearms is they are slow and the damage output is not great. Military Hammer is probably the best weapon overall.

@CairnEnjoyer Ай бұрын
@@TNTITAN I agree as well, I love these detailed charecgter creators with tons of stats and skills to spec into as well as some narrative quality to the background which you can either generate or choose yourself. Almost always when a modern game praises it's "Character Creator" they just mean the look of the character only and nothing about a specific background or skills. If I want to play dress up dolls I'd play Sims, not an RPG.

@martenkahr3365
@martenkahr3365 Ай бұрын
Nope, it actually is the DF soundtrack, and definitely not the original music. Possibly because of copyright reasons. KZbin's automated copyright strike system for using anything that even sounds like licensed music is such a minefield of nonsense and copyright trolls that for a channel making its living on KZbin, it's basically not worth it to risk the original music of some old game with unclear copyright status and instead use suitable atmospheric music that is known to be safe (like the DF soundtrack) instead.
