Incredibly atmospheric soundtrack, foreboding bass and creepy instrumentation, perfect for setting the eerie planet infested vibe the game is going for, great stuff. One of the better shmups from the era imo.

The trick to surviving this game was the red-circular weapon. They ricochet off everything including yourself and you could rip bosses apart just byt getting close and unloading. You become untouchable after you get that gun. I used to play this game for hours back when I was 6, but I lost it and couldn't remember the title.Thanks for the review, Mark. You helped me find one of my favorite games again!

I'm surprised at your response to this game Mark. Bio-Hazard Battle seems to generally be considered one of the better shmups on the console. Also, the multi-player is definitely a great feature that should have been mentioned.

My favorite ship was the Electra, the one used for the Title screen. It offered both the Plasma Blobs and the Seeking Lasers as weapon options. Really regret selling this game with my first Genesis a while back, and as you see from my previous post, I'm having a hell of a time fixing that mistake.

I was always nearly as impressed with the animation as I was with the music. There are some larger creatures that at the time just blue me away, This is best played with a good sound setup and emulation that allows graphical enhancement to smooth out the crap genesis resolution and anemic color palette.

I agree with Mark on this one. The music, creepy style and atmosphere are what really stand out about BHB. It's undoubtedly a well-made shooter; but it simply may not align with your tastes well enough that you appreciate it fully. Personally, I file it along with ones like Gynoug/Wings of Wor. Similarly good in that it's very strange, moody and technically impressive; bad in that it can be aggravating to play and the overly creepy mood and drab color schemes just become off-putting eventually.

Yeah shmups in general are just underrated and virtually ignored by the mainstream community sadly. But yeah this game is very solid, runs like butter, looks and sounds great. Not quite on par with Thunder Force IV but it doesn't have to be.
