Aside from the artwork being based off the cartoons (as I might've mentioned in a previous comment), there were three releases: 1.) Tengen licensed, 2.) Tengen unlicensed, 3.) Namco official. There's very little difference in the actual gameplay (maybe AI patterns). Ms. Pac-Man, now that's different entirely.

This is my favorite version of PacMan. It has a good pace and smooth feel to it due to the NES capabilities, but still retains that great arcade style.

I wonder where they got the black cartridge ... the version I have is gray and has the Nintendo seal. Same game, though, and it IS a good one :) I am amused by the fact that the artwork on the cartridge matches the animated series from the 1980s.

Correct. The NES was capable of handling the Ms. Pac-Man that you speak of. So much so, IT EXISTS. (And, I hope it plays perfectly alike to the Sega version.) Being Tengen, it might be a bit hard to find. (...outside of E-Bay.)

Why does it seem almost every version of Pac-Man or Ms. Pac-Man besides the arcade is missing the... don't know how to word it, the "eyes tip-off"? In the arcade, the ghosts' eyes point in the direction they're about to turn just a split second before they turn, giving you a quick hint as to where they're going and helping you avoid being trapped... once you notice it, it's soooo much harder to play without it.

Tengen games were actually pretty solid. And Pac-Man Tengen and Namco versions are the same, except the title screen.

The Nes port was the same as the Japanese Famicom port which was released in 1983. Only two years after the 2600 port.

It's well known at this point that Atari released Pac-Man in an alpha state to get it out quickly, but would the finished version really have been that much better? The 2600 simply was not capable of properly doing this game so anything they released would have looked terrible in comparison to the original arcade game. Gamers back then apparently realized this because despite it's flaws, Pac-Man was still one of the best selling 2600 games, believe it or not.

You know, I'm in the UK and when I went on holiday (still in the UK) at the hotel they had an ORIGINAL PAC-MAN MACHINE. The tabletop version. Although it's called Puck-man. Over here the original game on its original release was called Puck-Man and the ghosts were called Funditsu and stuff. Still a classic for 20p a go.

Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde are NOT ghosts. Original arcade game monitor bezel refers to them as MONSTERS. Same goes for the Ms. Pacman arcade game. Second intermission, flesh colored feet? The 2600 version flickered so damn bad with practically no color change, Atari's marketing department purposely referred to them as ghosts on the packaging and instructions to try and save some face. That's where the whole ghost thing started and it just kind of stuck.

Well if the license plates should all have names of Atari games it would be a pretty good way to cut down on pollution. Think about it... Each plate has to be unique meaning there could only be 544 cars in Pennsylvania.
