Classic Game Room reviews RUNABOUT from Climax for the Sony PS1 from 1997. Prepare for vehicular destruction, surf rock and screaming as you run into cars, busses and fruit stands for money! Runabout is the first game in the series of vehicular combat / racing games and features three city environments, loads of unlockable vehicles and music from The Surf Coasters! Runabout is the Japanese version of the game, in the U.S. it was called Felony 11-79 on the PS1.

Thanks for sharing this video Mark. I have been going nuts trying to remember the name of this game. I have searched for years with absolutely no results I used to rent this game frequently from Blockbuster Video in the 1990s and played the shit out of it. Can't wait to relive another game I have not played in so long the ps1 was such a good system and I had so much fun gaming on that system then probably any others I've owned over the years thanks again and I'm going to drink a couple fine German beers tonight just for celebration (well really because I have ice cold beer in the refrigerator) . Bro, that's the ending. Spoilers below: After you get all 3 keys, the rich asshole who hired you opens the coffin and plays with the treasure inside, only to get "Raiders Of The Lost Ark"ed to death and then you just take the coffin for yourself. The end.

Had the game on a demo disc in '97 as Felony Eleven Seventynine. It had a stage where you chased a limo with a pick-up truck if I recall correctly. Played it all the time, it was kinda like Driver and GTA before those games hit the scene.

Joorum I played the crap out of that demo! Very strange to hear Mark call it 'One-one-dash-Seven-Nine', since the announcer at the start of the game clearly says 'Eleven Seventy Nine!' This was the UK version, and yes, the cool surf-rock soundtrack was present.

Super Runabout on Dreamcast was great. Played the heck outta that. Surf coasters did the soundtrack for that one too and it was fantastic!

"That PS1 look" is the look of awesome. I've not played all of them, but the ones I have played are pretty good. The Dreamcast version (or at least the demo) had a proper open world, so you could complete the missions, or just drive around doing whatever.

OMG! THANK YOU! I just watched your "Super Runabout - San Francisco Edition" Review for the Sega Dreamcast & I thought.. Hmmm, I swear something about this seems familiar, then I heard you mention "Runabout" was on PS1, withing about a minuet I could remember I had this game! & I loved it! I NEVER would have remembered if I hadent seen the previous video, so THANK YOU again for all the memories!! I WISH I was back to being a kid in 1997.... The BEST RPG EVER made, even STILL to this day, Final Fantasy Vii, Gran Turismo with more cars than ANY other race game, STILL! & Fallout 2 released on PC! The best time for gaming in history.

Two things: A: The PAL (UK) version, Felony 11-79, does contain the Surf Coasters soundtrack in full. B: The Surf Coasters are on Spotify, as well the entire soundtrack of Runabout.

A modern version of this would need only one map. The Mall from The Blues Brothers. The whole game would feature The Blues Brothers music and setting and you'd go around spreading the message of God and breaking shit up.

I had Felony 11-79 back in the day. Loved that game! It was crazy short, though. But it was fun to unlock all the vehicles (I remember there being a ton of them) and running through each level again. This should find its way onto PS One classics. ...but it won't because I don't remember the last time they released any of those.

This was also called felony in the UK, despite that term not being used to describe crimes like that anymore even though it has French and English origins. Runabout would probably have been a better term for the UK, because it fits in with our style of chaotic humour. I remember playing the demo as a child and wondering what i had to do.

I played Runabout 2 yesterday and although it is a fun and challenging game, I really hate the fact that if you do pass a mission, but forget to do the run without hitting anything (in order to unlock some of the vehicles), there is no way at all to replay that mission. I passed mission 2 and 3 without hitting anything and in the time limit. I figured that I might be able to go back and beat mission 1 in the time trial, which I did, but it didn't count towards the unlocking of the car since it wasn't being played in mission mode. So, pretty much you have to beat each mission in a row perfectly in the time limit and without a single hit, in order to unlock all 93 vehicles. I imagine that if there are about 5 vehicles at the start, and each level can unlock 2 vehicles (1 for time limit and 1 for hitting no objects), there are about 44 levels total. Also, i decided to play mission 5 before 4, because I figured why not, but after completing 5, the game went automatically to mission 6 and I couldn't even play mission 4. So that really sucks. This is THE HARDEST RACING GAME I have ever played. Not to mention, I beat mission 2 and 3 using the scooter, and it was pretty tough because of the old school very sensitive controls in the way it handles. For anyone that plays this, I highly recommend using an analog controller because the default controls are D-Pad, and it's extremely difficult to control the vehicles. Also it helps to memorize where cars appear on the road since a lot of the times, each level is exactly the same when replayed. I'm pretty sure this can be considered the mega man of driving games. I prefer the scooter because it can weave and squeeze through tight spots, but I think for mission 2 or 3, I had to drive flawlessly. At the end where you can either choose to go left and break through the airport hanger door, or go right and go around, I chose to go right but if I didn't get to that first right turn when having 18-20 seconds left, there is no way I was going to make it so I just restarted the mission. Some of these can be very precise. Even completing the mission exactly at 00:00, the game will fail you in the mission. It must be before that. I finished a mission like that and still failed and was so irritated lol. I definitely want to replay the game and try to beat all levels flawlessly. I hope I'm wrong with the whole levels thing. I only got to unlocking mission 6 before I shut the game off. Hopefully there maybe is a way later in the game that I can go back and play previous mssions, but from what I played I could not see one.

You can replay missions from the "email" screen, if I remember rightly. There's not only new vehicles, but a TON of "tuning" items to unlock, though most of them no nothing at all
