Star Jacker seems similar in concept to an Atari 2600 game called Tac/Scan (also made by Sega) in that all your ships are on screen at once. However in Tac/Scan after each round you can choose to replace the ships you've lost or stock pile them for later use.

i played this game a lot in the arcades here in the netherlands..pity you don't mention that it was originally an arcade game..and popular. i always loved the repetitive background music

If Sega made a Star Jacker in the mid-2000s, they'd probably give it a ridiculous and nonsensical time-travelling plot, three different evil twins/clones as well as a human girlfriend for Star Jacker and then release the game a year before it would have been finished.

You're right. I actually really like this game's audio. Not just the music but the effects, too. Such a classic early 80s arcade sound palette (even though it is a home port here).

Other than the original arcade cab there is a port for the Sega Saturn on a compilation disc entitled Sega Ages Memorial Selection Vol.2.

I loved this game in the arcade. One of the forgotten classics. I can safely say that there is no other home conversion than the SG-1000 version, which is a damn shame.

Mark your google skills suck. There's an in depth HG101 article on the game. It was originally an arcade game and was later released on Sega Ages Memorial Selection Vol. 2 for the Saturn.

Well, if we are talking about sequels for Star Jacker. You can consider Astro Warrior as a spiritual successor, it's almost like this game but pumped. Only that they replaced the other ships with the atoms companions.

This was the only game I had for my SEGA 3000 in the mid 80's. It wasnt years later I managed to get other cartridges. Marathon sessions lasted all day and my best was level 160 odd.... By that time the game is just running flat out and all you can do is dodge everything as best as possible.

The MasterSystem Converter for the MegaDrive/Genesis isn't compatible with SG-1000 games, is it? Because this SHUMP looks quite interesting, even tho it's one of those vertical ones.

***** Nope, Megadrive lacks the legacy video mode to play sg-1000 games, however if you have a flash cart like the krikzz master everdrive you can play sg-1000 roms on a mastersystem.

The only other version of this game is that it was based on an arcade board. I have it on one of my multi-game PCBs. This was one of the very first games I played on the SC-3000 when I found it at a sewing machine centre - yep wasn't the 80's fun :). It was one of the few games released in Australia and New Zealand, so there is a OZ/NZ and Japanese version. No difference, just the label. And yes it is an awesome shooter - so should have been ported to more machines.
