@@mryan89 PlayStation one can't play dvd only PlayStation 2 can but why didn't Xbox 360 include HD DVD inside Xbox 360 but please don't say to keep costs down cause if that were the case then why does Xbox o one S have 4K BluRay player inside
@mryan89

Hapa man never said anything about keeping costs down, HD DVD was released in 2006 and the Xbox 360 was released in 2005. Microsoft is a large and powerful company but I doubt they have access to a time machine. My line about the PS1 was a joke because it was released in 1995 and I thought DVD was released around 1996 at the time. According to Wikipedia it was actually 1995 too!

Bro I love your show but "a marginal improvement over DVD"? Going from 480p to 1080p and dolby 5.1 to dolby 7.1 (uncompressed) is "marginal"? I still use and love my HD-DVD player. I don't see any difference in pic quality between it and blu-ray.

I remember reading a review of this when it came out and while the PS3 had an amazing clarity in its blu-ray image the HD-DVD addon for the 360 didn't provide the perfect sharp image that consumers were really hoping for and for the value you were getting it was incredibly overpriced. It got a 3 out of 6. I only remember seeing it once in a store, but knew it would be gone pretty quick. Seeing as how this player only added the ability to play HD-DVD movies and games for the system still needed to come on DVDs. While PS3s had a built in blu-ray player which allowed not only for playback of blu-ray movies, but allowed games to come on blu-ray discs. So while games like La Noire, Dead Space 2 and Rage all have multiple discs that require you to change it during the game the ps3s blu-ray capability made so multiple discs wasn't required. If the Xbox 360 had come out with a built in HD-DVD player that even if it was a mediocre player like the addon it would have at least cut down the need for multiple discs on 360 games by allot.

Sony won with Blu-ray because they took the hardware loss and sold ps3 at a loss for a few years. for the first couple years a ps3 was a basically a blu ray player with free built in. game system. they did the very same thing in 2000 with adding a DVD player to ps2, back when a home DVD player cost 300-400 for an entry model.

So I bought a xbox hd dvd player (~$12) in order to back up my collection, and also preserve the movies as the hardware will get harder and harder to find. Im ripping them then I'll compress them.

I have a dual format Blu-Ray burner/HD-DVD-ROM drive on my PC. I mainly got HD-DVDs of movies that were not on Blu-ray at the time - Forbidden Planet, Excalibur, Smokey and the Bandit. (All on Blu-ray now) I also got season 1 of Battlestar Galactica (reboot) for $10 on HD-DVD. I got a few used movies through Amazon for like $4 or less. The clearance prices are less common now. I added the XBox 360 HD-DVD drive so I could watch the discs on my TV. My drive only came with King Kong. I didn't notice the noise problem, but I was also seated in a normal living room setting. I've read that the drive can be used on a PC, but I haven't tried it yet. I did have a LaserDisc player and about 250 discs. All sold now. The format lasted from 1979 until about 2002. I used an old Magnavox player back in 1979. I pretty much lived at the TV store next to my parents store. Surprised I was never kicked out. :) ...being 10 years old at the time. There was a disc format war back then too - LD vs CED. CED was basically a video LP - Yes, let's use a needle instead of a laser. Oversimplification but it was a type of needle being used on CED. There was also VHD that I don't think ever got sold outside Japan - never made it to the US anyway.

No PS3 is the major catylyst that spurned other businesses to drop support for HD-DVD. It sold at a faster pace than 360 since launch in 2006, the same point when BD movies outsold the HD-DVD movies. In fact at the end of its first year it sold 10.5 million compared to the 1 million HD-DVD players. With so many Blu-Ray players already in people's houses it started the movement for people to drop support for HD-DVD and shift towards Blu-Ray.

Actually, Sony offered Warner Studios, (I think it was them,) a 500 million dollar "incentive package" to release their movies exclusively on Blu-ray. It was shortly after they accepted when Toshiba and the HD-DVD group gave up. The war was neck & neck until Disney tipped it a little in Blu's favor, but it was Warner going exclusive that finalized the format war. Warner had more rights to far more movies than any other studio at the time.
@Sjono
@Sjono 9 жыл бұрын
Warner Bros switched exclusively to Blu-Ray in Jan 2008, but they were doing multiplatform the year earlier. At that point it was clear HD-DVD wasn't going to survive, the damage had already been done and was irreversible. Blu-Ray movies outsold HD-DVD movies 2:1 in North America and 3:1 in Europe. With more players, retailers, distributors, and applications supporting Blu-Ray all throughout 2006-2008, it would be crazy to back Toshiba's side. With everything going against it was inevitable they had to give up

I bought one back when the 360 launched, I really thought it would triumph and beat bluray, the reason was simple, it was cheaper, much like the VCR, and at the time the loading times for hd dvd were much faster than the first gen bluray drives. But this time people wanted fancier tech. Different times, different standards

As the whole business agreed, HD-DVD had better picture than Bluray. A free opensource format, shot out by JVC/Toshiba Fun fact, flip a HD-DVD disc upside down and you have the standard DVD version of the movie. It failed because Sony had the Bluray in PS3, cheaper than any Bluray or HD-DVD player AND you get a console. Sony won. Sadly.

I had a copy of "300" on HD-DVD/DVD once. Sold it when I could before it lost all value. I never got to play it in a HD-DVD player. Why did I have it then? I ordered the plain DVD version and they packed the HD-DVD version which thankfully was dual sided HD-DVD and DVD. So, no biggie. It was interesting to behold though. Red transparent case, smaller than your average DVD case, pretty much got the same literature as a DVD copy, the HD-DVD side was more "holography" than a DVD.

They really messed up by not including the HD-DVD drive as the 360's default drive. A lot of people at the time who weren't even into gaming picked up a PS3 because it was the cheapest way to buy a blu-ray player in those early years. The 360 heavily outsold the PS3 till just about the end of the generation, it HD-DVD could've won the media format war at the time off built in sales there alone, but even if it hadn't, having the drive built in would've allowed for more disc space with less video compression than the DVDs used in the end. Oh well.

Because griping about noisy Xbox 360s ISN'T a topic that was worn out nearly a decade ago. And for the record, the sound and picture quality of HD-DVD isn't a "slight" improvement over standard DVD; it's a huge step up that's on par with what you get with Bluray today. Also, the primary reason Bluray won out was because of Disney going exclusively BR. After that, it was a war of studio attrition that HD-DVD was destined to lose.

Plus as far as I know there isn't a blu-ray release of Streets of Fire (one of my faves) coming anytime soon even though it's been long available on HD-DVD. I've read on a few sites that the HD-DVD release of Superman The Movie is slightly better than the blu-ray, as well.

I was able to rip an HD-DVD with this thing through MakeMKV in Linux. Good thing too because the Blu-ray version of said film has lesser-quality audio tracks.

I've currently got about 50 HD DVD movies, mostly gotten after the format died and the movies could be gotten for a few bucks and got the player when it was 50 dollars with King Kong and half a dozen more movies for free, so it was a good deal at the time, still think it is fine as long as you can get movies for it. I'll have to try playing regular DVDs in it again as I was going to use it to play regular DVDs to save the motor of the system it'self when playing them, but found that it wasn't working at the time, it's been years since I have tried though.

I bought a couple of these drives. Before I acquired a PS3 and after it was announced Blu-ray would be the preferred physical format used by all the studios, HD DVD prices just dropped off substantially...creating an opportunity for cheap entry level HD format movies...However, I've basically switched over to digital only these days. Stupid format wars...😄😉

I still use my hddvd player to play regular dvds as it has a superior upscaler to the 360 although it has playback issues with a ton of hd movies from Warner Entertainment

It's weird that dark red (Something associated with the PS3) was HD DVD's case color. While blu ray was... well blue.

I actually still have a 360 HD-DVD player and a few HD-DVD's. Of course it's not connected, not worth the space it would take up. I was such a sucker and bought a bunch of HD-DVD's so I also have a hybrid blu-ray/HD-DVD player. It still works, but like the HD-DVD player it's not connected anymore.

I also disagree with your statement of two crappy tape standards, Beta and VHS. Brand new tapes on a quality VCR had a better performance than we remember. Obviously inferior to Laser disk and all the digital formats that followed but for the day they were decent.

If this functioned as a stand alone HD-DVD player that becomes more immersive when connected to the Xbox I imagine it would hold a bit more value and I'd definitely want one since I don't have a stand alone DVD player, just a plethora of consoles to get the job done. It would be cool to just have on the shelf as a stand alone device to play DVDs (because the red HD DVD cases feel like a alternative reality or 3rd world country's version of HD video) but since you have to connect it to an Xbox that already plays DVDs I'd have no use for one, other than to say I have a mini Xbox if I ever found one cheap. Microsoft should have made an Xbox 360 that size which would be really cool, or instead of releasing the ugly Xbox 360 E, made it fit into the casing for the warehouses of HD DVD players they never sold.

I am surprised HDDVD lost the format wars with Microsoft backing HDDVD. If the XBOX-360 had a built in HDDVD maybe the outcome could have been different.

The tech of the time. Even though the player just gets the disc data and sends it to the 360 to process and render, it's still pretty "new" tech for its time and as such it just wound up being really bloated in engineering - I have an Toshiba A2 HDDVD player and it's bloody huge due to the drive and the CPU-esq motherboard to do all the work. Let's not forget it's a standard sized optical drive base in there, for the same general reasons. Think about it, it's a decade later, things do slim down.. remember the size of the PS2 back in the day, the original model, that slim is due to advances in engineering and design since the original release. Something about me kind of loves the fact that my A2 player is so massive my blu-ray player could fit into it probably 8 times over. It's crazy, but hey, I like it.
