The soundtrack is bloody amazing in this game, I remember having the Megadrive version when I was younger but I always skipped the opening to get on shooting things.

It should be noted that two-player simultaneous play was only available in the US arcade version (i.e., the Williams release). Zero Wing was originally a one-player game.

I love Toaplan shooters! It makes me sad that Toaplan is no longer around. The Japanese Mega Drive version isn't too expensive.

I agree with you all the way on this one, Mark. Zero Wing is a great shmup, and I still play it from time to time. Really should have gotten a Genesis release.

yes for sure - i distinctly remember being mind blown as a lad seeing altered beast for the 1st time but the little sega 16 bit box of childhood dreams still doesnt fail to surprise and neither does mester Mark at CGR which is why i loves both

Every time I hear about this game, I am like "okay okay, the meme - got it - but let's talk about the goddamn gameplay already". It was nice to see that this video had that approach as well, and mostly just mentioned the meme a little bit and then talked about the actual game, instead of talking about the meme for like 90% of the video.

That's the very reason why I like Classic Game Room so much. I don't need Mark to be overly negative and trash games just because he could, I have AVGN or Yahtzee for that. And like I said, there are games he does't really care for, look at his review of Dark Void, the Hyperscan, Ridge Racer 64 or that Starsky and Hutch game he did recently.

There are games that he doesn't like, just like anyone else, but he chooses not to focus on the negative. Mark never comes out and says that something sucks, because in his mind every thing has to appeal to somebody, and because that it must have something to it that is worth focusing on, without dwelling on all of the bad things. And FYI, just because you don't happen to like something, doesn't mean everyone is going to share your opinion. Some people may, but some will not. That's just life.

Interesting fact: This uses an OPL2 sound chip. They definitely make better use of it that most PC games ever did.

There is also a secret 4th level power-up. It all just depends on luck though as there is a random chance to get it, where you get a purple power-up that makes the firepower really huge.

All jokes aside, Zero Wing is an amazing game, and along side Ys: Books I and II, Streets Of Rage 2, and Power Rangers on the Genesis, this is my one of my favorite soundtracks ever.

It's going to be hard to find power for the Intergalactic Space Arcade, since most other review shows have bowed to Lord Karnage already. Not much fear left in the KZbin universe to feed off of. Better consider some Intergalactic Space Generators soon CGR.

As was the case with Midnight Resistance and Truxton, the arcade music is extremely bland in comparison to the Mega Drive version. In this case, the PC Engine is on the CD add-on and has kickass arranged music, so that also makes the arcade OST bite the dust. However, I think it goes without saying that the arcade version looks and plays better.

Toaplan's OPL2 soundtracks had a vibe to them that was missing in the Megadrive versions. That's the same sound chip as the Soundblaster though Toaplan made much better use of it than most PC games ever managed to (most PC games just set the operators and envelope and then triggered notes and didn't do any realtime modification of the parameters). The bass sounds in particular were really good in Toaplan's OPL soundtracks. The Genesis/Megadrive version of Zero Wing and a few other Toaplan ports were actually made by Toaplan themselves. It's a pity Twin Cobra wasn't though.

For a game this infamous, Zero Wing is not actually that expensive. I got my European MD version complete in box for about 10 euro. By the way, the MD version is region free, so there is no reason not to just import it and play it on a Genesis. It's just too bad the MD version doesn't have a two-player mode.

it's awesome that you say Mega Drive, and not Sega Genesis. Here in Brazil it's megadrive, so I was confused for years when people talked about sega genesis on the net.

Yeah man. We're the same in the UK. And Europe. And Japan. Just the North Americans got the Genesis tag. Same legendarily great machine. Im pleased to hear that the console is big over there with you guys still. There is hope for the world yet hahaha This game never saw release for the US Genesis though. Just one for the Megadrive regions, by the looks of it.

Cool, I have both the Megadrive and PC Engine versions, and I think the PC Engine version is the best one, but not by much. Would be a nice one to own the arcade PCB for.

Guys... let's think of it this way. He cared about this video, Mark, and the arcade game so much that he actually wrote a long and detailed comment about how bad the level design of an old arcade game is. I don't see anybody complaining about how Pong is like. Really well as far as I can see. The musics better on the Megadrive. Graphically pretty much identical and the features of the game are there too..same gameplay and patterns. Real good conversion, I'd say. One player only on the MD.
