Ahhh it's so refreshing to see a review about the original series!! Many ppl slept on the 2001 version mainly bc "not as badass as Ultimate". Personally I like both versions but the TV one has a very nostalgic feeling that feels close to home. I'm just glad you made a review of it, great job!

Hellsing is to Hellsing Ultimate what Jazz is to Metal; both are amazing, driving, consuming of attention, but one is a slow burn, and the other is a raging inferno. Enjoy them both. Also, noir styled supernatural anime is an often overlooked genre, so that too.

Just kidding, I know you probably mean something along the lines of Thrash Metal, Beatdown, or Tech-Death, but I'd say Black Metal fits Hellsing Ultimate pretty well. Even the slow parts of the show rip you to shreds.

For me, Hellsing’s greatest lesson was, “Would you be willing to give up EVERYTHING to get what you want or to get to where you want to go?” Seras quite literally gave up her life in order to get to where she was.

I love Hellsing in all its forms, as both the manga, the anime and the OVA have different strengths and weaknesses. I understand why many disregard the anime, but I love the music, the extra time given to Seras and the flashback to how Alucard and Integra met is the best version of the story. It's great to see it getting some attention. :)

The original Hellsing has one of my favorite anime moments in it. The part where silver haired arrogant vampire guy takes on Alucard and Alucard acknowledges him as a vampire and summons his beasts. There's just something about that scene. For all the times shows have a character mumble "he's a monster" none of them have the feel of that scene. There's just a palpable feeling in both directions. The silver hair vampire is a monster being horrified when confronted with a true monster at a level that he never imagined juxtaposed against this almost casual surprise and disappointment from Alucard. What you can't do these things? Of course you can come on, buddy. Heal and summon your beasts. Come on play with me. What are you doing? :sigh: Later versions never really perfectly recreated that scene in my opinion.

i agree, but its because in Tv when he went through the cromwell invocation he drained the room of light, meaning that valentine could not run away, where as in ultimate he kinda just stood there. also the music, i hate that people see music as just an extra to go along side the animation, but it is the music that made that scene. if i had to choose between better visuals and better audio, i would always choose audio.

God I love Hellsing. I haven't seen the new one but I've bene meaning to watch it tho. One aspect I love in general that og Hellsing does, is the idea of evil-doers getting in over their head with an even greater evil-doer and realizing their mistake too late. When Hellsing, the true vampire, goes after the lesser vampires thinking he'll get a good fight out of them but the lesser vampires are terrfied of him and his unnatural powers, and he ends up disappointed as they shriek in fear, ah i love that haha.

I loved this version as much as Ultimate. I agree with your opinion about art style, first did it better. In the first version, there was this little vampire that describe the them you mention a bit better, but also adds this is a curse aspect to it.

Thanks for this. Hellsing is a wildly entertaining series, and it's always fun to hear people talk about it. That said, I think the TV series loses a lot of the soul of the story simply because there wasn't as much source material to work with. The lack of any real resolution to Millenium and the introduction of the stand-in final boss makes the last few episodes feel like filler instead of the climax it was supposed to be, even if it showed Alucard going full restriction level 0. It felt like a rehash of his fight against Alexander Anderson, just with more bondage attire and pyrotechnics. That said it does manage to touch on the character motivations of its cast, even if it can't dig as deeply as Ultimate wound up doing years later. So just like FMA Brotherhood is the better series compared to FMA, Hellsing's first half works as a more gradual build up to the story and world, but Ultimate is overall the stronger showing. I will say though that Hellsing TV has a sick sick SICK soundtrack, and has arguably way more style than the OVA in that regard. It's a crying shame there's no standalone track for Alucard's piano theme when he's introduced, because that meandering, whimsical melody sounds like it's being plinked out by a lunatic souped up on bourbon and it just WORKS.

I used to love this series in high school, but it didn't progress past the 4th or 5th publication of the Manga. I think the more recent adaptation was better done, more in line with Kouta Hirano's edgy style of manga, and the story it tells is closer to the manga and also far more interesting and complete. Goddamn that sountrack though. I have quite a few of the songs from it downloaded to the external hard drive I keep music on, and it's still some great shit.

Hellsing was among the first Animes I watched after the world of Animes was opened to me. I just happened to watch it I think because some Free TV channel showed it at the right time and I loved it. It's an interesting jump because I believe I started out with Sailor Moon and Pokemon maybe Digimon too (don't have the first aired date in my country in my head) and Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne (was the title I think or similar to it). I even think I saw Hellsing before Dragon Ball or at least at around the same time.

Hellsing has that 80’s level of crazy gore and animation along with higher levels of polish that comes with later anime. I loved the original and the hellsing ultimate that followed only cements it’s greatness as a series. I could watch either with the same level of enjoyment all be it for slightly different reasons.
