this is pure gold. preserving this old knowledge is just amazing

One of the best videos that I have seen on old style Judo. Sadly so many people troll videos and make disparaging comments. Such people shame themselves by demonstration their lack of understanding the role of Kata in developing an understanding of the principles of the physics in martial arts. I first learned some of these Katas over fifty years ago, it is only now that I understand some of the principles. I am pleased that you included how Tomiki contributed to the development of the Goshin No Kata. I hold black belts in both Judo and Tomiki Aikido (Shodokan). Modern Judo sometimes forgets its roots and the debts it owes to the great men who developed Judo.

i really wanted to play judo/jiujitsu. but i never got the chance. how do people train for years without living / working near dojos? how are they making a living while training?

I did a clinic for the katame waza kata a few years ago with an eighth degree black belt, and it was virtually identical. Great stuff

A lot of these old katas appear to be more assassination-focused rather than self-defense.
@РођакНенад7 жыл бұрын
It looks so because in the past the goal was to survive not to get a first place on a tournament,so you had to be prepared to kill the opponent and the techniques had a high chance of hurting the opponent(breaking bones and similar)so if you want to demonstrate it your uke had to assist if he didn't want to be injured .Btw. if a master demonstrates something it looks like he had assistance even if the uke resisted.
@marcpeschke40613 жыл бұрын
@@РођакНенад I think KiklerSalmon meant "assassination" not "assistance". Assassination= intentionally killing.

are there really weapons katas in judo? If there are really such techniques , is something that probably the majority of judokas don't know. Judo with strikes and weapons katas is a completely martial art
@cptant76107 жыл бұрын
The weapon katas are still taught for higher dan exams IIRC. But for the rest it is the part of the old jiu jitsu styles that modern judo almost completely dropped.
@scarred103 жыл бұрын
There are no weapon katas,there are some weapon defense though.

I keep telling the BJJ community this is what's wrong with BJJ, you have no history and I've trained both Judo/BJJ and there's no historical history thaught so I love this because what MARTIAL ARTS are all about.
@scarred103 жыл бұрын
There is of course history in bjj,just a much shorter one than judo but teaching history has nothing to do with combat or self improvement or helping your fellow human.Kata is an entirely useless method but it was a way to preserve history.
