I've been looking for a recipe that suits my innate laziness as a cook, I've found it here and wow, perfect. Thanks very much, Lauren, it worked out spot on for me.

Okay. So I made this yesterday. Added a few cloves of garlic and some chicken stock paste. Would have never thought to used the turnip but I am glad I did. Delicious!

I am discovering that turnip (often instead of potato) is one of the secrets to a full flavour in traditional soups like this.
@ChrisM541 Жыл бұрын
A great soup, though certainly a wee bit different from being traditional Scottish (hough usually boiled separately, meat removed and broken up and added into soup, onions given a fry first, less/no additional stock cubes). Having said that, there are always variations to most things and your soup will, of course, be yummy.

This is one of my most favourite soups. Absolutely delicious. I don't know if that's a smoked ham hough - I've always used a smoked ham for that extra flavour. I also like that you cook your veg in the same pot as the hough to ensure maximum stock flavour goes into the veg. All in all, a michty tasty soup indeed.
@laurenscravings2 жыл бұрын
It’s definitely a smoked hough - I love the flavour you get from it - can’t beat it!

For anyone who can't get Knorr Ham Cubes where they live and would like to use L.B. Jamison's or Better Than Bouillon Ham Base, 1 Knorr cube makes 2 cups of broth. In other words, 1 Krorr ham cube is equal to 2 teaspoons of L.B. Jamison's or Better Than Bouillon Ham Base.

I can't believe the size of that ham hock. It's 2 or 3 times the size of the ham hocks we get here in the US. And your carrots are short and fat. Ours are relatively long and slim.

I am never not going to grate veggies like this again, holy. That said, the 4 stock cubes when you have a Hock and not pre-frying your onions! aghast! XD

making this soup for the fourth time, its absolutely delicious. but i would love to get the weight of the ingrediants, making it again and the turnip is massive, i could probably used 1/4 of the turnip so i put in the same weight of carrots, so iam winging it now, hopeing for the best.

Would have thought after 2hrs the lentils would have completely disintegrated! To much salt maybe? I’d add stock cubes at the end.
@laurenscravings4 жыл бұрын
Nope to your comment about the lentils and the salt - as vetted by lots of people who have made it from my insta. Stock cubes are your own personal choice 👌🏼 but to be honest, make it how you want it ... that’s the joys of cooking
