Editing this made me miss my little apartment and my books so much - I filmed this a few weeks ago so here is the second episode in my recommendations series! Classics and companions that are either retellings, have something to do with the classic in question, or are just good books to read hand in hand with that classic!

Saying “It’s just a strange author to have growing up” when you show Poe made me do a double take. I’ve read very few classics but I’ve read every Poe story since I first encountered The Black Cat and Cask of Amontillado when I was 10 =)) he influenced a lot of my personal tastes (aesthetic, media, literature, clothing, disposition lol) I never thought it as strange but I could see how other people would, his short story collection is my most beat-up book hahaha

Anthony Burgess' novel Nothing Like The Sun is a really good speculative account of Shakespeare's life, which could be helpful to read in preparation or alongside one of his plays for a person who's more partial to prose, or who gains a sense of bearing from historical and biographical context.

your earrings are adorable! ahhh Edgar Allan Poe, my favourite I should read The Mysteries of Udolpho since I loved Northanger Abbey! omg I neeeed to read The Iliad, and all the greek classics yes yes yes yes Dorian Gray, gosh I adore that book so much. one of my all time favourites Dracula introduced me to the gothic genre, and for that it will always mean the world to me amazing video as always

I think you would really like "Ghost Quartet"! It's a retelling of 1001 Nights, the Fall of the House of Usher, and The Twa Sisters, among other famous stories. There's a profilm of it available on youtube. The writer, Dave Malloy, has also done a musical based on a section of War and Peace that's really excellent as well.

The Song of Achilles is a good way into the Iliad. I totally understand why people are intimidated by the Greeks and Greek Literature. I was till I did my Open University courses.

Just found your channel and I'm really enjoying your videos! So this year I've tried tackling some 19th Century Lit: Alice in Wonderland, Emma, Moby Dick, & most recently The Picture of Dorian Gray. Emma I enjoyed the most because it's CLUELESS 😁 But the other three, I was so bored reading them(especially Moby Dick). I can appreciate the writing in all of them, but just did not enjoy reading them 🤷🏻‍♂️ I might have to reread Dorian Gray at some point.

Edgar Allen Poe is one of my favorites, I absolutely love him! My freshman honors English teacher got me into him. Have you ever listened to the audiobooks? Sometimes they have spooky music in the background and OMG, they are so awesome to listen to during the Halloween season! Great suggestions! :)

Ah, I read The Monk after reading Northanger Abbey - it was an experience! I need to explore more of the books referenced in there... I loved If We Were Villains - as soon as I finished I reread it straight through, then twice more last year. The specific Shakespeare plays I feel like would enhance it most would be Caesar, Macbeth, and Pericles. Do you know of any Aeneid retellings? (I have only heard of Lavinia by Usula K. Le Guin)
