The Elizabethan was a daily non-stop service in celebration of the new 'Elizabethan' era of the early 1950s. Departure from both ends was in mid-morning, for a teatime arrival. It ran only during the summer months, including in 1953 and 1954.
You are about to watch Vintage footage of York Station filled with people, trains arriving and departing
In the summers of '53 and '54, York was alive with the sound of laughter and chatter, with outdoor cafés buzzing with life. There was a sense of community, travel back to to a simple time and enjoy this classic footage

I remember trains like that. They were comfortable, unlike the bus like seats we have now.

Ahhh, the nostalgia of a time when the world we lived in seemed normal. When life was simple and uncomplicated. Maybe I`m looking at life through 70 year old rose tinted spectacles but would love to experience again those long lost days.

Amazing video. The few wealthy in the 1950’s really travelled in style. Everyone else toiled away. It’s more egalitarian now but the standards and experience of travel are low along with the prices. Where did all these indigenous people go? They’re not around anymore

It's the usual story. Levelling down to the lowest common denominator and charging more for it.

These were ordinary people on an ordinary service. Everyone dressed up to travel on a train. They weren't wealthy, just people going to visit friends, or the seaside, or to see another town. Prices weren't particularly high, either. Remember it was nationalised at the time and prices were subsidised by the government.

All those National Servicemen in uniform on their way to here and there. I remember sitting on my kit bag on Crew Station... Freezing to death in my great coat.. A nice country back then.. Thanks for posting. Happy New Year to you and yours.

I remember looking forward to seeing an A4 pulling this train in the early 60’s. Sitting on Welwyn North station I can’t still remember the disappointment it was pulled by a Deltic.

..... Great Trains - AND Coaches; more leg room/armrests (that you could push up or down) The Pullman coaches were Something Else; seats like padded armchairs, thick carpets, fancy table lamps, inlaid patterned wood marquetry........ 👍 & NOW? - Its like sittin' in a sardine can ...... the journey's shorter; but the quality of travelling is Dead. This engine "Silver Fox" Original LNER No 2512, which is displaying its BR No 60017 in the video, was the fourth of the run of the first four A4 engines ever produced, in 1935. The first one ever made "Silver Link" Original LNER No 2509, BR No 60014, can be seen at the beginning of the Will Hay film "Oh Mr Porter" when Hay is tapping the wheels whilst the train is being christened.

I have to say the engine driver and mate have some nasty habits , seriously I remember the times well it was the variety of Steam engine's and combinations that my brother and liked , also the engine drivers always use to wave back at you . On a hot summer's day the railway bank use a catch fire with the cinders always would run and watch. The rolling stock were extremely comfortable compared to the rubbish we have now........Happy days long gone
