I would say a mix of both. A ship that was found in a breaker yard that you rescue and customize to taste.

QotV: I'd go with a custom design 10 times out of 10. All the "standard" designs have drawbacks that are critical for me. 100 ton Scout Courier: too small for economic activity (and I like trading between worlds). 200 ton Free Trader: only Jump 1 capable, so there are too many planets you can't reach 400 ton Subsidized Merchant: I don't like being tied down to one route. Plus, still just Jump 1. 600 ton Subsidized Liner: I still don't like being tied down to one route. Plus, not much cargo capacity for such a large hull 800 ton Mercenary Cruiser: Fine if you want to be a soldier of fortune, but useless for trading. My solution: Custom 400 ton trader with Jump 2 capability. Plenty of room for 200 tons of cargo. 4 turrets for defense. And, if you allow High Guard construction rules, include a fuel purification plant.

Gotta go with custom ship design. I want to see how You do it in Classic Traveller! I've made a custom ship using CT rules many years ago just to see how it's done, and it turned out to be far larger than I anticipated! It went from being a small missile frigate to a large missile carrier! Good thing it wasn't for players, just an idea of a warship in my head put to paper and it turned out beautifully.

I’d go with custom design. I have enjoyed designing them although I have not done any for a couple of years. I’ll have to dust off my LBBs and make some this summer!

Ive been playijg Traveller on and off for 40 years. Most players are very happy modifying stock ships untiĺl they hit the big league then its all about custom starships etc. Personally I prefere custom ships but I gotta admit stock ships are my go to 90 percent of the time

As the kind of player who could never leave well enough alone I could never stick with unmodified standard ship designs, but designing a ship from scratch was more work than I wanted to do (I was already the GM, and that was plenty). My forays into ship design were more about modifying existing ships -- combining small cabins into larger more luxurious ones, adding smuggling compartments, that sort of thing. My players, however, loved making custom ship designs. If I were in a Traveller campaign now I would probably create a spreadsheet to handle all of the calculations... because I'm not one of those odd people who thinks it's fun to do math. :)

Was always hesitant to build a custom ship. I hope this gets me over it. As for the question, I’ve always done a premade or hybrid… but I want to go custom now

I'd love to design my own custom one, even though it would end up looking and functioning like Homer's barbeque.

I am an old battletech player and currently GMing for "A time of war" battletech rpg, and have read that traveler heavly influenced the battletech rpg. Through, your videos i am seeing some of those influences. I am going to have pick up a copy of traveler.

I'll like your thoughts comparing this with Alternity's system... when you get there, Servant. I'm not familiar with all the pre-existing classes of vessels in Traveller... but I'd probably need to bone up before my USD$0.02...

This does sound fun, if I had the time. I do love the amount detail this system brings to this. Thanks it's been a minute since I looked at this Vintage tome. Now I have to dig through my stored books and see if I still have some of these.❤ I would like to make a custom ship, but with the time I have, I would most likely use a template.

Having played a large amount of Star Wars, wherein you typically get a stock model and customize, that is the way that I'd likely go for Traveller. I would also make a point to include a 'pond jumper' for landing on planets that would not be able to handle my large vessel.

Still one of the better modular GM screens I've had, those are some great screens.

I played the classic Traveller When it first came out for a short time, then I stopped for other games, and the next exposure was Traveller New Era edition of fire, Fusion and Steel. This book was insane and amazing at the same time lol. Still work with it on occasion, when I create a character now in current Traveller I just use the far trader and add a ton of generator to deal with the power issue :).

I would buy a used slow generic looking ship and then trick it out with hidden guns and speed. Able to blend in but bite and run if necessary. Like some hot Rod getting blown away in a street race with a station wagon. Lol.

Did anyone else try to recreate the design from famous ships. Battlestar Galactica viper, Star Trek Enterprise, ETC?

Personally, I've always taken the Starport rating as being more an indication of the quality rather than size and what facilities (shipyards, fuel, etc). As I see it, with the standard hulls and standard drives from Book 2, there is no reason why a Class B (or even, perhaps a C or D) Starport in a system where the main world is classed as "Industrial" and the tech level is high enough shouldn't be able to construct starships. For custom ships built using the rules in Book 5 High Guard, it's a different matter - they would need a more specialised shipyard.
