"Lost in Space" was one of my favorite shows when I was a kid (I remember the first TV airings). Like the other three shows Irwin Allen produced back in the 1960's, LIS was a science fiction variant of classical literature, based on "The Swiss Family Robinson" ("Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" updated "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", as was "The Time Machine", becoming "The Time Tunnel" and "Land of the Giants" was inspired by Brobdingnag of "Gulliver's Travels"). And like all of Allen's shows, LIS had a few plots using the classical literature formula, such as "The Magic Mirror", which was inspired by "Peter Pan", and "Collision of Planets", which not only parodied the Biblical story of Samson, but biker/hippie movies as well. I also find it ironic that LIS did better in the ratings than "Star Trek" and that both are now hailed as 'classic television'...

Johnathan Harris, and the interaction between "Dr. Smith, the Robot, and Will Robinson", is what made the whole series a smashing success. Over-the-top kitsch, wild characters, and a farcical plot, is what made the show so entertaining. It was refreshingly new and different, and it was Johnathan Harris who carried the whole show!
@Geezer-yf8hv2 жыл бұрын
Harris was blamed as “re-writing” the whole show. Harris did re-write his own dialog, and later was redoing the dialog with the scenes with him, Will, and the robot! These were hi lights of the show! He never re-wrote the story or plots of the show! That blame fell upon the original writers, who were massively burned out! The writers loved Harris’s input, because it left less work for them!

Grew up watching Lost in Space. Loved it. Wonderful memories. Favorites were The Sky is falling, Wish upon a star, Attack of the monster plants, Return from outer space, Keeper Parts 1 and 2. And especially Follow the leader. Basically the entire 1st season was awesome. Only a few of the second season come to mind. The Cave of the Wizards was good. Trip through the robot, as well as Wreck of the robot. The Phantom Family, The Astral Traveler, and The Galaxy Gift were written well. Everything changed in the 3rd and final season. Several episodes were ok, but even after reruns began, I couldn't wait for it to get back to the black and whites of the first year. 3rd season memories are pretty much, A visit to a hostile planet, Anti matter man, Space Creature, Target Earth, and The time merchant. I was definitely a fan of the show. Never missed an episode in the mid sixties when it aired, and hurried home from school in the later sixties when it began reruns in Phoenix. I think September 1969 was when KTAR tv channel 12 picked it up. It had only been canceled the year before. I'd rush home at 330. Make my ice tea and sandwich, then fire up my old black and white tube tv in my bedroom. My sister and I would actually audio record our favorite episodes with our radio shack tape recorders. Lol. Was cool to fall asleep every night listening to a recording of it. Like I said, I was a serious fan of lost in space. Super great memories, and still watch it not only on my DVD collection, but also on METV every Saturday night. I'm in my sixties now. Lol

Yes even as a child I could see that the show was going down in quality in its second and third years. I actually think they should have stuck with the black and white of the first season. It gave the show more gravitas. The Great Vegetable Rebellion was sooooo bad that quite often, when the shows would come back in reruns, I'd skip that stink-a-roo, All in all It was a good series and if you haven't had a chance I'd recommend that you watch the new version of Lost In Space on Netflix. The writing, acting and special effects are all top notch and it's fun to see how they've changed the dynamic of the characters and all over storytelling from the original. There are quite a few call backs to the original show if you care to look. If not it stands on its own as a totally new TV show. I highly recommend it!
