I think this helps to spread the product evenly through the hair. I saw something similar on a recent Schorem video and the barber explained that for pompadour type hairstyles, the pomade has to be applied evenly through the hair. This can be done in layers over the course of days between washes. But it requires a lot of combing and dedication.

I took a class with Joth at Savills in the UK and he showed me how to do that. It saves your wrists from carpal tunnel. Also makes it easier to cut your sections.
