I am Brazilian and I own both Brazilians (15 window and single cab) split bus and German split bus (Westfalia) and I can discuss this topic at length as I have seen this happening again and again. As with any business opportunity comes the correct and incorrect people. There are restoration workshops in Brazil that do it right and those that replace rusty metal with fiberglass. Parts in Brazil are proportionally more expensive than in US/EU/UK so if you are buying a Brazilian bus that is comparatively *way* cheaper than a German counterpart you have to be aware that something is fishy

Worked on a few here in Australia, some very good and some need more work, no different than german ones. Depends where you get them from and how they are treated before.

You're saying you've never seen clapped out suspensions on German buses? In the video you mentioned bearings that have scored the spindles. My German 67 beetle had a bearing seize to the spindle right after I got it and 64 bus I got in San Diego was so bad it needed full king pins and spindles what is the "1000’s on the German ones" referencing? Are you mostly saying expect Brazilian buses need full suspensions or? @@AirkewldVWs

Incorrect. Zero German Bus's have had this hanus work done to the king pins that make them unusable. To eloborate further, I have seen my fair share of shad tree work that is unsafe, laughable etc, a majority of them are German Bus's. What I am saying exactly and to the exact point, when bus's are imported into the US, the people who own them in Brazil will do anything to them to garner a better price in the US. As you can see from this video, I haven't seen anyone in the US try this but 5 out of 5 Brazilian Buses had the exact same thing on them. If you feel this is par for the course, perfect. If not, you now are aware.

You must remember they are coming from a country where they were kept on the road any way possible with what ever parts they can make work. Some of the German buses I’ve worked on had crazy stuff done to keep them running. They were cheap transport and a dodgy machanic was well a dodgy machanic 😉

@@Demop_VW_garage Great point. Also can be said back in the 70's and 80's when these cars were still driven so much more than now. Again, this is just bringing some light to a vehicle that I am finding out is more taboo to talk about...crazy.

I'm Brazilian and here we also suffer from malicious people who do everything to make a profit in any way. But every time we see these stories of Brazilian cars that are exported in this way, you can be sure that those who are truly passionate about air cooled cars are embarrassed by these people who tarnish our image. There are many professionals with excellence in Brazil and in general, the best cars are sent abroad because in Brazil they end up being very expensive. (Sorry if there is an error, it was translated by a translation app.) I believe there are many Brazilians who follow your channel just like me. I like your work.

Buyer beware whatever classic vehicle you are buying..... they are old vehicles that at some point of their life required repairs to keep them running, and very likely at a time where cost was a consideration to the owner. I am actually very proud and astounded that my Brazilian bus was in daily use until 2005, it was imported as was and definitely shows it's scars. My advice don't expect a good bus cheap with shiny paint and don't pay money for a shiny bus without carefully checking what you are getting is what you are expecting.

its interesting that you have called this out as a Brazilian bus problem but what you have shown and described could be on ANY bus. Its not like Brazilians have the market on mechanical short cuts. I have a brazilian 15 window and flipped my spindles and there was nothing like this in my spindles. Like the guy below my comment. There are people who do things right and there are people who make short cuts. calling this out as a "brazilian" problem in misleading

Again, this is my experience. This is not a biblical fact but by the sheer amount of emails and replies I get, this is more common than you might be aware of, but I could also be wrong. If that is the case, my clients are magnets to the bad ones…

This analysis was based on just "one" set or various sets? Pete, before posting such a video, give viewers a chance to think for themselves. This was a poorly put together Frankenstein bus. But, NOT ALL Brazilian Buses are like this!

5 out of 5 so far with on a guess, at least 100 or more from other people who build Classic Volkswagens. Again, if yours is not like this, A M A Z I N G!! You are a lucky one and I am glad that was the case for you. And, I appreciate you commenting but you are wrong for suggesting viewers to think for themselves. The wool is already over the eyes of many. I am going to give sound advice and client, viewers and/or fans can take it from there. Happy Holidays Danny.

Hi, I cant tell you how disappointed to read and watch this video. I own a 66 German Bug, and a 69 Brazilian Bus and believe me, i have issues with my bug more than you know. Yes, Brazilians are not made like the German buses, but does not mean they are POS. What would have been more appropriate is posting a video on how you can help us Bus owners fix our issues and make our cars solid. Pete, you are well respected in the industry, and your comments can devalue our buses in a huge way. Personally, i think you could've messaged this differently.

It is what it is Stuart. No one is telling the truth about these type 2's except my clients crying that they have to invest even more money....every......single.....time. Let's look at it another way. If you didn't have your Brazilian Bus and you watched this video, would you be wary of the problems? Would you have negotiated a better deal knowing you will need to re-invest more money into it? Or is it more about the people who overpaid for these? Again, no one is talking about it. For years, we talked about us as VW owners pulling torsions to lower our Vdubs, not about safety, but more about looks. That was sketchy as hell and is still taught today on Forums. If we are on the devalue subject, I have a question for you. If you had a Clean 66 Bug that was completely stock but had an EMPI beam and disc brake kit on it, would those parts add value to the car? How about the same question but with a PRObuilt Beam and BAD Series Disc Brakes on it? Would that add value to the car? IMO, the German parts are more valuable then the Chinese parts. But I think (possibly biased) that our parts installed on it adds value. Am I wrong? Let's debate.

You may have missed my point, I have no issue, highlighting issues. But simply putting a blank statement out there that all Brazilians are POS is not cool, neither true.. Your video highlights a serious problem, but because the owner bought a bus that had shitty work done on it in the past doesnt mean all are shit. hell man, even in the USA you get dodgy car mechanics, aircraft mechanics that cut corners and do shoddy work. But, Isnt this why you are here? to work through these types of issues and design better updated solutions, whether the issue came from a brazilian or even german? You said yourself you are biased towards your parts. If Airkewld were mine, I personally would capitalize on this and grow my business to help out owners, making their cars / buses safe and great to drive. @@AirkewldVWs

No, i didn't, i got your point. Your point is that all Brazilians are POS. Which is BS.. read my response, i said, "I have no issue, highlighting issues" In fact, ive even praised you and your business, yet you are not open to anything anyone suggests. There are other comments here that indicate same.. Be Open Pete, perhaps your engineering is top quality, but your method of communication sucks. And my name is Stuart, not Scott. @@AirkewldVWs

You are putting your own words in my virtual mouth, so you need to rethink how your are comprehending this video and my context. Not once did POS come out of my mouth, that's you. This platform is not the WHO or the FDIC. I am presenting my side of the story, which I am allowed to do for MY clients or anyone who VALUES my OPINION in anyway shape or form. I asked for context and facts about the exporting process and you have figured out a way to make it about it's value. I am going to present this another way. I am paraphrasing this. Back in the day, Toyota had a problem with it's accelerator sticking due to a floor mat if I recall. Accidents were happening, people posted the issues on Social Media, then the papers, then the news, then Toyota has a recall to resolve the issue. You have to start the conversation to present information (or like you wanted, 'how you can help us Bus owners fix our issues and make our cars solid') which this is about, an issue in ALL the Brazilian Buses we have touched, (even more from clients, shops, garages, other people who touch these things in the industry). If I am a Classic VW Enthusiast, this video helped me understand what is being done to these prior to import. If this shakes out that my 5 out of 5 ends up being 5 out of 100, I will definitely update the video due to that. But as more and more experience and repetitions occur, the data will show what it shows. And to go along with the theme you presented, 'how you can help us Bus owners fix our issues and make our cars solid', the TEAM we have put together have created a solution to this problem to make them safer and more solid than before. We call it the PRObuilt Spindle Service for the Brazilian Bus. Known problems are known problems. Every vehicle has them. Appreciate and value your love for these cars and I wish you and your family the Happiest of Holidays.
