I still find it hilarious that after the VFX department's attempts to make Erato's appendage less phallic, there's absolutely no erasing that image of Tom Baker grasping Erato's protuberance and giving the end of it a damn good blow. I'm still amazed that they got away with that in a family show of all places and I bet Tom Baker deliberately did that on purpose!

Tom Baker was, in fact, imitating popular dog trainer Barbara Woodhouse who would blow down a dog's snout.

6:10 - they had two K9 props. A plastic shell with no internal workings for on-screen carrying. Then the radio-controlled one, which was quite a bit heavier, about the same weight as bedside drawers or a small coffee table.

Organon is one of those examples of a delightful side-character elevating an otherwise lacklustre episode. Some guest stars just click with Tom Baker with joyous results. For me this story's biggest mistake is that it kills off Adrasta way too early, then scrambles to come up with plot to fill out another twenty minutes and as much as I appreciate the message/mystery of the ugly, murderous cave monster turning out to be misunderstood and benevolent, I think Star Trek did it first and far better with the Horta in 'The Devil In The Dark' (knowing this fandom, saying that is probably tantamount to heresy).
@alexbruce949910 ай бұрын
Devil In The Dark is for sure a better story than this, but it is a common plot in Who and sci-fi in general. Galaxy Four comes to mind as a similar "the ugly monsters are actually benevolent and the beautiful people are the real bad guys" plot and I'm sure there's plenty of others.

Compare story similarities to FAR POINT
@jcortese330010 ай бұрын
If I'm any evidence, there's more overlap between the two fandoms than a lot of people may realize. 🙂 Been a Trek fan since WAY back, but I really like this story as well, green glowing phallus aside. I love when Adrasta takes the translator in her hand and is condemned in her own voice. I think that's a REALLY neat touch.

There are two K-9’s in this story, one with all the electrics inside and one hollow one to be carried.
@whobp810 ай бұрын
Your opinions on this story and the previous one are pretty much the same as the majority of fandom's. And your analysis does make sense, a weak story can appear even weaker when it's following right on the heels of a really strong story. The radio controlled K-9 was quite heavy, but they had a light weight prop version which they used whenever he had to be carried. This works better when whoever is carrying him acts as if he's heavy, cuz when they carry him too easily, it gives the game away a little. Erato is supposed to be amoeboid, so his size and shape are fluid, which is why he looks bigger in some shots and smaller in others. The rather phallic nature of his pseudopod caused much hilarity amongst the cast and crew and was changed between studio sessions, but the footage of the Doctor trying to communicate via the original, erm, thingy, was already recorded and remains in the episode for better or worse. 😂

I believe this classic who story is yet another example of something American TV shows took ideas and inspiration from, for all those STAR TREK next gen fans out there, we see in this story too many similarities to the TNG pilot episode FAR POINT, even the concept of the creature communicator design
@scottboswell640610 ай бұрын
Thinking THIS story has points that inspired the Star Trek:TNG pilot is giving this wayyyyyy too much credit. On the other hand, this has story points done in the "Devil in the Dark" story from Classic Trek (misunderstood creature moving around underground, mistaken for a monster, etc.).
@Wannabe_Baby10 ай бұрын
"How heavy do you think K9 is?" That was my EXACT thought when Romana picked him up! He looks bulky and he is remote controlled, so you'd think he'd have a bit of weight to him. I agree with pretty much all of your post-episode thoughts. For a story called "The Creature from the Pit", I thought the creature was the least-interesting part.

@@joshuaverran9443 I love City of death and I like Shada. Tom and Lalla are great. But season 17 is such a parody of itself imo. And while that can work with its stronger material with the weaker stories not so much. Douglas Adams works in small doses. The effects also take such a hit this season as well. Not the shows fault it was the late 70s. I feel like this is the worst elements of the Graham Williams era which I think is already Toms weakest era.

@knavehart10 ай бұрын
Season 17, especially after City of Death gets a bit of a bad rap for being silly and self indulgent, but I love it, maybe just for that reason. Especially in light of modern sci fi's trend to gritty and grim. Doctor Who, right up through the modern age, manages to keep it's light.
@scottboswell640610 ай бұрын
One of my problems with this story is how screechy the 'main' villainess was, but all the greedy, stupid people left behind were worse! The tumbleweed 'wolves' are my worst creatures ever! They did try a different story structure and Tom Baker's humor are the best parts about this.

I think this story gets far more hate than it deserves. Erato is probably far too ambitious of an idea for the special effects Department but that's not the first time that Doctor Who has bitten off more than it can chew budgetary wise and it's one of the things about the show I've always loved. I think the modern era loses something by the amount of money they can throw at their problems and often suffers for it with every crisis having to be bigger and bigger with nearly every episode threatening the entirety of existence which honestly is not where the show has ever excelled at.
@ladycplum10 ай бұрын
This is not a very well-liked story among most Whovians. Organon is a great character, and Adrasta is sufficiently menacing, but the rest of the cast...especially the bandits. Notice when K9 stuns one, he actually turns to find a comfortable position to land in instead of just dropping to the floor! And they couldn't be more stereotypically Jewish if they tried. Plus, David Brierson's K9 voice is just not match for John Leeson.

Destiny and City are the best in season 17. Creature bad, but in a funny and enjoyable way. Nightmare is campy and low budget, but I enjoy it. Horns is one of the worst doctor who stories, and one I tend to point to when people complain about the Chibnall era. The other story I tend to show people to make them realize that the Chibs era isn't all that bad is The Twin Dilemma.
