Hi Helen, I just wanted to thank you for sharing your knowledge and time with us. I've decided to try mosaics after having worked in stained glass for about a year, and your videos have been so informative and pleasant to watch. And I just purchased your book! Thank you so much--from Tere in Nova Scotia, Canada

Thank you Helen for this very clear explanation of traditional backgrounds. I’ve just completed a koala up a gum tree on a large piece of pvc pipe. I’m not sure now how to complete the background which will be sky mixture of blues. I’ve done it all in glass. Any ideas? Libby

That sounds like a really interesting project. I have never thought of using a pipe as a substrate! In terms of ways of filling in the background, I would have thought it would be hard to do any other way except crazy paving. kzbin.info/www/bejne/amrZaXp_rMqnZqs

Dear Helen, I made a opus everythingum mosaic 1m x 50 cm with tesserae ceramide from Appiani which I cut w a hamer and a split and splitter them to my needs. I have only 1cm hight in the workspace. The tesserae are already 1/2 mm thick. Can I use a 3 mm aluminiumplate as base to carry the weight of the mozaiëk on the table base? I need a strong base but do not really know what to use.Thank you

Yes, aluminium is an option as a base but you need to use an epoxy glue to stick the tesserae to the metal because the metal doesn't have any grip. Epoxy is expensive and quite toxic so if the table is for indoors then I would recommend using a plywood base. That way, you can also get a frame made for it at the same time which would protect the edges and just drop the mosaic into the indent. I hope that helps! 😀
