One particular habit of Morricone, especially in his cooperation with Sergio Leone, that distinguishes him from most film composers, is that he often wrote music based on the script alone, before even a single scene was shot - and he and Leone understood each other so well that Leone occasionally changed the pacing of a scene to have it match with Morricone's music. Where others compose music to simply enhance the scene, Morricone distilled the scene itself into music.

Operatic treatment. Love Harmonica's theme and how it plays together with Frank's bad guy theme. When those 2 have their fi al showdown, both themes are played together and they fit like a glove. Chyanne's theme music is very representative of a man on a horse. The female leads theme music is achingly beautiful. It is also used as the closing credits music. Way to go, Ennio!!!!

I have since learned from watching many reviews of this musical score that the conductor is from the Minneapolis Orchestra. I live in MN and I definitely need to attend one of her concerts. I “borrowed” the following from another person’s review but I think this was some excellent information … “”The conductor here is an American "guest" conductor for this concert. Sarah Hicks is the principal conductor of the Minneapolis Orchestra, graduate Magna Cum Laud with a BA degree in music composition from Harvard University. Sarah is highly sought after as a "guest" conductor the world over and has worked with dozens of orchestras all over the word in both hemispheres. What does a conductor do? In this case Sarah chose all of the music for this concert which centered on Ennio Morricones' Spaghetti Western movies sound tracks. She spent hours studying the entire score, making notes as she went along that she would later share with the musicians during rehearsal, She then rehearsed the Orchestra and choir sharing her vision for the various songs, what the dynamics would be, play softy here, a bit more fortissimo (with force) there, establishing what the tempo will be, applying her leadership to inspire these very "Top Shelf" musicians to project her vision of the music and concert. Sarah does have a series of KZbin educational videos addressing this very question that you asked: "What does a conductor do?'" She is quite an impressive young lady, very talented and, I feel quite gifted!””

Had Morricone been an American he would have had a stack of Oscars, including for The Mission and Once Upon A Time In America, but the Academy likes to take care of their own. Of his six nominations, five were for US movies, ignoring the vast number of European movies for which he deserved to win. In the end the Academy was shamed into giving him an honorary Oscar and then the "oh, you're going to die" Academy Award for The Hateful Eight, which wasn't even deserved.

I have to respectfully disagree. While the orchestra was good, the tempo was too quick; losing a lot of the tension from the movie version. The use of piano instead of guitar for the arpeggios was very disappointing to me, and they were too even rhythmically, losing some charm and emotion in the process. It would've been epic if they included the last line of the movie though!

IMHO Ennio Morricone is the Puccini of our era. All of his sound tracks are terrific. My favorite of his melodies are the love theme from Once Upon a Time in America (Deborah's Theme) and Gabriels Oboe (the Mission) are among the most beautiful melodies of the 20th century. Vocalist Sarah Brightman convinced Morricone to allow her to set lyrics to the theme to create her own song, "Nella Fantasia" - a favorite of crossover singers with Operatic skills. The whole soundtrack from Once Upon a Time in the West is a work of art, the main theme just gorgeous.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly was the final part of a trilogy of Sergio Leone films; all three were scored by Morricone. Masterpiece in film making and scoring. The Ecstasy of Gold is an iconic piece of music, you can hear it everywhere (even in Modelo beer commercials). Every time I hear it, it ends up bouncing around in my head for days. Killer soundtrack, for sure. My favorite musical trait of Ennio Morricone's film scores is how he builds those quiet crescendos with strings (violins, etc.). Example: the first few moments of the final showdown track "The Trio". The way he builds tension from the quietest moments up to the full volume ending is GREATNESS!!!

The lady who sang "wah wah", her name is tuva semmingson, a classically trained singer in her own right, she sings everything from opera to standards to pop. A diva of the 1st class. If you look closely, for this concert she was wearing little six shooter earrings. PERFECT!!! I watched an interview with the two vocalists.Tuva Semmingsen AKA the Wa Wa Lady, as she has been called by the tube, actually likes being called the Wa Wa Lady. She couldn't believe how this performance took off on the tube. Christine Nonbo Andersen is the solo vocalist in the audience. This was her first performance with the Danish National Orchestra. Both ladies nailed their performances and added a stunning element to this Ennio Morricone masterpiece. Ennio Morricone was a composer of film soundtracks, where he used instruments and objects that are not normally used in an orchestral ensemble. Electric guitars, basses, ocarinas, bongos ... but also whips, gunshots, gusts of wind. Entering Morricone's work is a complete immersion. A moving tribute for fidelity down to the smallest details is what the Spaghetti Werstern Orchestra did to him.

Great reaction... Yeah in 1966 - this was NOT the definition of a Western them ( maybe Elmer Berstein was ?? ...) But not long after the Dollars triliogy - and as we look back - this is NOW the signature Western theme - that's how impactful this piece by Morricone has been. He redfined the iconic western music. It was something else for decades and then he re-defined it with this. FYI flute for Blondie, ocarina for Angel Eyes, and human voices for Tuco

Welp... there goes my favourite trotting off into the sunset and here comes the new rider! For years my favourite theme to a spaghetti western was "The Magnificent Seven". Since seeing this performance I think I'lll be tuning into to this for inspirational music! That wind instrument at 03:38 looks like an ocarina by the way. First time I've ever seen one being played in an orchestra. There's all kinds of trippy little accents in this show. I love it!

One of the (many) great things about this movie is how the landscape is used. It's brutal and often cruel, but imprinted with the memories of thousands of years of attempts to tame it. Morricone captured this struggle perfectly, it's as if the war cries of long-vanished tribes are still being carried on the wind.

Morricone was apparently inspired by hearing the sound of a coyote howling, which is how he got the fast five-note run at the beginning of every phrase. "The movie is a spaghetti western". Correction: the movie is the greatest spaghetti western, against which all others are measured. Well worth watching. The "flutes" at the beginning were recorder and ocarina. BTW, I saw a talk show on TV tonight which had soundtrack composer Hans Zimmer on it. He claimed that Morricone was his hero, and that no-one has ever composed film scores so beautifully.
