#Dio #Malmsteen #Aerosmith #DreamOn
In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm reacting to an epic cover of the classic song Dream On by Aerosmith. This version, led by Ronnie James Dio and Yngwie Malmsteen, was released on the 1999 Aerosmith tribute album called Not the Same Old Song and Dance. I really like this cover version! (I used the spotify version of this song.)

Lots of people in the comments saying Malmsteen should have held back. ...this IS Malmsteen holding back 😂 And tbf I like his lead parts in this song. He's put his stamp on it. It would be weird if he was on the track and he'd played it straight, we'd all be going "IS that Malmsteen?! It doesn't sound like him...", whereas this way, there's no doubt lol. It's probably easier for me to appreciate his playing on this as I don't know the original well, my ears aren't used to hearing/expecting certain lead parts.

One of my favourite songs by Yngwie. He does his thing, but really embraces the song, rather than just soloing over everything. Dio was amazing, as always

As a swede I've followed Malmsteen's career since '85, and it's been going downhill for the last decade or so. He's still got the chops, but he needs a manager (who's not his wife), a good band, a good producer, and he needs someone to tell him when to hold back and when to blast away. That will never happen. This however, is one of my favorite Malmsteen moments ever, probably because he's restricted by the song. And Ronnie's vocals are awesome, as always. ;)

Malmsteen has been on the up again lately I've found. His playing is solid and not sloppy at all, as there was a period in the late 2000's through the 2010's where the sound was muddy as hell and he just looked out of it and tired all the time. Recently, he's been on fire. No more muddiness, he looks energetic and delivers a good show. His albums have been on the okay spectrum for a while now, usually featuring one or two tracks that are really good and the rest sounding like any Malmsteen track you've ever heard. But then, that's been the case since Unleash The Fury.

@@kochstevens3210 Ian Gillan would be the first and most obvious name - although it would be interesting to discover how many of those he inspired actually reached the heights (pun totally intended!!) he did? I know I didn't (in either meaning of the word). Although I actually don't particularly like him, the other name that comes to mind instantly is Ozzy. Proof that you don't have to be vocally brilliant to front a mega-successful band and influence future generations. I'll throw one other name out there - Robert Plant. Although tbf I think it's actually LZ as a band that inspired people rather than the individual members despite all being technically brilliant virtuosos. You are of course correct that the subject is purely subjective; Bruce Dickinson - one of my own favourite front men - lists Dio as one of his influences. IIRC he was quoted as saying something along the lines of 'he really sings and in a very different way to other guys'. As you say - each to their own 🙂

@@SVSupervox ye.. i agree Gillan could get up high, but Dickinson didn't arrive till early 80's.. both were groundbreaking true, but i think Dio had a certain phrasing that was his trade mark & distinctive. a style if u will. I had no idea Dio covered this! Malmsteen is Malmsteen - one gets exactly what one expects, lots of noodling, generally too much noodling, but always played with insane intonation and clarity. The only time I saw Malmsteen live was when his band opened for Dio in 1990 or 91 - boring as hell, but technically brilliant. Dio, of course, was awesome, as he was every time I saw before then... but anyway... great cover! So good to hear Dio's voice again. For my money, he's THE voice of heavy rock and roll/metal. A god of delivery and artistry. Lots of other great singers, of course, but Dio gives me goosebumps. And Dio and Malmsteen together on this - just wonderful! I have to say, Malmsteen offers some guitar work here that works. I wasn't sure I'd appreciate his role in this cover, but I do. And while listening, I could hear Joe Perry saying, "Dude, I don't play that many notes in a whole concert. Impressive!"

I really liked Dio's singing, he gave the song his own tone without differing too much from the original. Also i thought the drums were great on this version, giving it lots of energy. I couldn't however find a liking in many of the overlaying guitar parts. While played in a masterful way, i think they didn't really fit the overall mood of the song - but maybe that's just my personal preference.

@@Macloud2 I count myself as a diehard fan, but of the pre-accident Yngwie. He actually used to leave space and had pacing and interesting phrasing prior to running his Jaguar into a tree in the late-80s. My suspicion has been that something in his brain changed and that he may possibly be suffering from CTE, because, to me, he is a very different player than when he first emerged on the scene. His playing used to have twists and turns and now is largely just streams of notes with little regard for the progression or rhythmic motif in the background. There are things that he has done since that I like, but most of it is things that he actually composed as a teenager in Sweden that didn't make it onto a major album release until later in his career. I wish he would do more work with symphonies. Something about that format seems to make him more focused and disciplined, and if anything possibly affords him the opportunity to add to grow and to add to his legend since he has pretty much done the neoclassical rock shredding to death.

Hi Doug, you mentioned that you'd like to react to full albums on your Patreon. Well, as you'd like to do more Dio, you won't go far wrong with his album 'Magica'. It's pretty epic! Other great Dio tracks you could consider include 'Holy Diver', 'Don't Talk To Strangers' and 'The Last In Line'.

I never prefer a cover over the original because songwriters deserve all the credit - but this is the best second I ever saw.

yngwie's closest album to a rock album was the one he did with joe lynn turner odyssey to bad they didn't stay together longer. i got to see them live and it worked

In terms of delivery, I PREFER Dio's to Tyler's. His diction is better, he's more dramatic with his pitch control and embellishing note choices and vibrato, there's just so much to love about this performance for him. And he SMARTLY just skipped over the part where Steve goes into the whistle-register scream, because he knows he doesn't have that gear. At the bare minimum, he paid a proper homage to the original while still making it distinctively his own. I... won't talk about Yngwie's performance.

Prefer Dio singing this. Ronnie doesn't do the screaming that Tyler does on the original but Steven hasn't got the control and range in his chest voice that Ronnie did, and this wasn't even Dio in his prime! Hated Malmsteen's input, waaay too many notes as per usual.

@@ronnienose8608 Nailed it. Every aspect. Including Yngwie playing way too many inappropriate notes and walking all over delicate parts.
