In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm reacting to Hold On To Memories by @DisturbedMusic. This poignant and wonderful song is from their 2018 album Evolution. The lyrics, music, arrangement, and performance all combine to make this a special track. An instant favorite!

There are very few metal bands that have the bravery to bring it right down in the middle of their set, reduce you to tears, and then build you up again. Live this is absolutely chilling.

My brothers youngest daughter passed in 2015 from Sepsis at only 20 years old. It hit our whole family so hard...and my brother has never been the same. I didn't know what to do to help...until I finally decided to pick up my paints and a large canvas and paint. I ended up painting a garden of flowers...unknowingly painting them in all of her favorite colors and flower types. I didn't finish it on purpose...as I titled it, "Amanda's Unfinished Garden" I told my brother that if any of her friends wanted to come over and add their own flower to remember her...it was ok. This song has really helped me hold onto my memories of my precious niece ! I am so sorry for your loss of your husband. You have my condolences.

It amazes how these heavy metal/hard rock bands sometimes compose songs like these (power ballads I think it's the right term?) that are lighter in sound, but very deep and emotional. I can think of Metallica "One", "The Unforgiven", "Nothing Else Matters" and "Fade To Black", Iron Maiden "Wasting Love", Megadeth "A Tout Le Monde", Scorpions "Wind Of Change" and "Send Me An Angel", Guns 'N Roses "November Rain", Aerosmith "Dream On", Judas Priest "Beyond the Realms of Death", Led Zeppelin "Stairway to Heaven" and so on. This song is just another great example of how good these bands are.

late response, as a metal artist myself. A lot of the time we are focused on the things that make us angry, or the things that seem to be societal injustice, heavier things, however, we are human, we feel the rest of the emotional spectrum, most of the lighter ballad stuff I write will never make it out with the bands I'm in, because it doesn't fit their theme or vibe. However bands that are well established like the ones you mentioned can afford to go outside their norm and do these kinds of songs, where smaller acts like the stuff I am involved with, we really can't. Just remember although our focus may be more aggressive, we still feel things the same, we're emotional creatures just like the rest of humanity.

One of my favourite Disturbed songs is The Light, it beautifully transitions where they are starting to play with a softer note but still has that Draiman growl to it. If you ever get a chance to react to that one, I'd love to hear your opinion. Great video though, excellent analysis 🙂

I’ve listened to this track a few times and it’s going on my funeral playlist. The first track of it is Prayer For The Dying by Seal. Six years ago my grandad collapsed, aged 92, and I gave CPR until an ambulance arrived. After several shots of adrenaline and continued CPR they declared him dead. I’d lost my oldest friend and put on Prayer For The Dying. “I’m crossing that bridge with lessons I’ve learned. I’m playing with fire and not getting burned.” I loved it before and its now inextricably linked with my grandad and all the good times we had.

I’m glad I’m not the only one with that idea. I’m tired of going to funeral after funeral and hearing the same half dozen songs. I’m like screw that shit, if I die I want songs I LIKE played. Songs that I feel should be played. Not generic shit that everybody and their grandmother had at their funeral. One of my other songs (that my sister hates me for) is Remember Me from CoCo. The version from the end of the movie.

@@blusasuke87 I want people to enjoy it, say it was a great day, and give them music that’ll remind them of me later on. “I’ll love you even when you’re dead,” a friend’s then 6 year old daughter told me last year. She’d been isolated with her mother for months during the first pandemic lockdown here in the UK. She was 11 hours old when I first held her and 3 days old when I drove her, her mother and grandmother back from the hospital. I used to read to her, now she reads to me. She might be the only child in her school who listens to You’re My Best Friend and Friends Will Be Friends by Queen. Songs she likes playing on days I drive her to school. Its to her, my nieces and other young friends that I want to give wonderful memories and music to recall them. You Saved Me by The Winery Dogs will be amongst them.

Their entire Evolution album is them doing different things that they have in the past - hence Evolution. I'm not a heavy metal fan, but I love their Evolution Album. This song has gotten me through the death of my husband during this past year. You mentioned this as an alternative to more religious songs and many people have connected to this in exactly that manner. The song A Reason to Fight deals with mental illness and suicide. They really showed their depth with this Album.

BTW...glad you "came around" after hearing S.O.S....about the "gruff" (grit/rasp/vocal fry/distortion).....which by the way is incredibly difficult to do.....especially if you want to have a voice after 5 or 6 years or less. David Draiman...a voice to die for! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to distortion and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do and he makes it look so damn easy! He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before........just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! An awesome talent. You may be interested to know that David also writes all the melodies AND lyrics to Disturbed's songs. I also spoke to a vocal coach recently that told me the distortion he uses for example at the end of S.O.S.....he gets by using the false vocal cords, situated above the true vocal cords, which very few people can do, which is why he's kept his voice for so long.....and yes, he was trained as a Cantor for many years.

I’m just finding you here, Doug. Your ability to just add a piano melody to the song by instinct is truly astounding. I really liked listening to your reaction and interpretation to this song. I have been a long time Disturbed fan. I’ve listen to their heavy and lighter music. This is one of my all-time favorites. As you said, in this period of time during a pandemic, this song brings a full spectrum of emotions. It’s an incredible piece. Most of us have lost friends and/or family members to this disease alone, not to mention all of the other causes that we have lost people to. I am one who has trouble expressing emotion openly and find that music is my way to open up. This song brings me to tears almost every listen. I’m so glad that you were moved by this piece. How beautiful this video was, your reaction to this heartfelt song. I especially loved how you played along so beautifully with it, and how well it fit together. Not too long ago, I had tuned my aunt in to Disturbed, by that very same cover - The Sound of Silence - and she loved it. Turns out, her and my uncle had also listened to this song as well, little did I know prior. Well, one month ago today, on December 4th, we lost one of my cousins - two weeks before her 46th birthday, no less - niece to my uncle, whom I had grown extremely close with in a very short time, and this song came back to me again. Secretly I had planned on it being my own little tribute to my cousin, as I knew she would have at least known it (being a Disturbed fan herself), but when I shared it with my aunt and uncle, my aunt thought it would be a good idea to learn the song, and sing it in tribute of her. Well, it happened about two weeks later, at a family gathering, to honor her life. Three of us performed the song - my aunt on piano, another cousin (one of my aunt's sons) on guitar, and myself on vocals (though they accompanied me on backup vocals during the chorus). I'm no David Draiman, not by the slightest stretch of the imagination, but surprisingly the whole song was just barely at the comfortable end of my upper register, and when we were done, there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

This was the first song I had heard by then and it was on their TicTok I caught myself tearing up. So at that point had to search through KZbin then Google. This song and then their cover of The Sound of Silence and the other cover If I Ever Lose My Faith In You may sound weird but when I’m in my feelings these are my go to songs. Lost my marriage, then a month later lost my grandmother then a year to the day lost my mother so this comforts in low times.

We have a problem, Doug…this was the first time hearing this Disturbed song, and now it’s not right unless I hear your piano w/it! It seems unfinished when I hear the song normally. Not sure how to fix this…you’ll have to cut a cover/collaboration of the original version. Can’t wait to hear it!

I didn't see it mentioned, but David said the lyrics to this song were inspired by his watching Coco with his toddler. ❤
