I remember playing this in high school band, possibly as part of the once-a-year "jazz band" concert. I played electric bass, and I think this was one of the songs where I'd do "fancy snaps" fingering for the "naaa-na-na-nah-na-na-nah-na-na-naaa" part (based on how my muscle memory wants to play the part. To clarify: Think about snapping your fingers. Now move your thumb to the ring finger, so you can "double snap." Now, replace your thumb with the bass string, but keep the same quick triplet move, so you hit the string three times fast).

The organ sound (essentially very distorted leslie type sound) was unique to the era. You can check bands like Uriah Heep (Gypsy is a good start spot there) and many others who used organ as a way to have melody and let the guitar player run wild, and then reversed with stay at home guitar players and soloing keyboards. It added a dimension to the music and very much made for a nice fat sound. It's especially good as organ like this back in the AM era actually sounded very nice on the radio, which was a good call... and when FM came around, people marveled.

During this early time, Jon Lord was the implied leader of the band, mostly because he was the most musically trained. The Mk1 albums have lots of his ideas, which ultimately leads up to his Concerto. Before they turned full hard rock (mainly inspired by Ritchie). This song, their first, was a hit in the US and lead them to tour there, but did little in UK and EU... it took them a long time to repeat that success, while the Mk2 era became huge in Europe fast

Must be something about the sort of chord progressions that were popular mid-late 60s. I grew up in a classical opera oriented household, but a lot of these compositions from when I was about 5 or 6 seem to be more ingrained in my head! As far as all the covers are concerned, crazy Finn Ben Granfelt has one of the best interpretations to me (Ben does a lot of his own compositions with his and various bands, but his covers are bold enough to take things a little differently and it must be down to the long Finnish nights). Find the studio recording on his 1999 “E.G.O.” Album. That also has a great take on Hendrix’s “Wind Cries Mary” from the same era that’s also worth a listen.

Great song. Glad you pointed out the plagal cadences, that part does sound a little bit like what the organist at mass warms up with before the mass starts. It totally makes sense that they changed the key to C, it's a lot easier on the organist and guitar player. Eb is okay on guitar if you tune the guitar to Eb, but (for me, a novice on keys) playing organ and just dealing with the white keys and the Bb, and knowing the other black keys are there for flavor during an improvisation, is a lot easier than trying to not hit the white keys that don't work with Eb.

A bit surprised that the chorus chord sequence (descending in fourths) was not identified as also part of other well known songs such as Hey Joe (a hit by the Jimi Hendrix Experience and also covered by DP on that same debut album), also used in the dividing section of A Day in the Life (by The Beatles -right where Macca stops singing about his dream and John returns-), and not much later by CCR on Efigee. In fact, when Hush came out many of us went "wait a minute, that chorus is just a faster version of that Beatles' ADITL bridge". Since Rod Evans was mentioned, I'd like to humbly suggest at some point you could review the amazing band Captain Beyond, with Rod on vocals, the incredible Bobby Caldwell on drums, and two ex-Iron Butterfly members, Rhino Reinhardt on guitar and Lee Dorman on bass. The first two albums by CB both contain amazing music way ahead of their time (odd meters such as 5/4, 7/8, and more). Cheers.

Covers were omni-present from the moment someone heard an original piece of music (or an even older version) inspired them to do their own version of it, to wander the land as a minstrel and sing to the masses, even before the dawn of recording. There is a lot of non-monetized cover content on the tube. It is, like mythologies and stories being sung over in an ever recursive and evolving knot called music. Or something like that. ! The recording industry brought covers to the fore for decades really as the consumer culture was pushed to get people to consume, rather then play instruments more often, I think, until the mid to late 1960's. Platforms like youtube kind of remind people they have permission to be creative. Some musicians are innately harder to pull off a good cover of. as well.

I recently idscovered that "Book of Horizons" by Secret Chiefs 3 is the greatest musical accomplishment in modern history. A collaboration between John Zorn (best known for writing for Mr. Bungle) and Trey Spruance (guitarist for Mr Bungle, composer). It runs the gamut from Middle Eastern influenced, cinematic, modern classical, to unbelievably technical, utterly terrifying, extreme metal, to electronic, culminating in a sort of symphonic, pirates sea shanty, that sounds like the aural equivalent of a Tim Burton movie. Each piece represents the best, and most innovative, of every genre featured (except maybe the classical pieces, which are very unique and quite good, but not Mozart level), especially the metal, electronic, and Arabic tracks. The catch is that you would have to react to the entire album. The theme introduced in the first track is developed throughout. Also, read the lyrics before hand. YOu can't really understand them when listening, and they are amazing as well.
