In this episode of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to one of my favorite songs from the '80s...In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel. The catch is that I've never heard this particular live version of the song. So, join me for a first reaction (of sorts) as we enjoy Peter performing in the round with musicians from around thte world back in 1993. I hope you enjoy!

Doug, if you get the chance and want to see mindblowing stagemanship, watch Downside Up from Growing Up Live.. check out the lyrics, but DON'T read anything about the performance, or see the thumbnail from the video, let someone else put it on for you. Guarantee you'll be amazed by what they do, and it's not just a gimmick but really has beautiful meaning when looking at the lyrics for the song.

A band you should check is Los Jaivas, from Chile. They were and are South america's answer to Pink Floyd, with concept albums, mixing folk music with rock, blues and jazz. Aside from their history (going into exile escaping the dictatorship, which could be avideo of its own), its Chile's best known band and one of southamericas greatest alongside Soda Stereo. Altura de Machu Pichu its their most well known album, which, as the name says, was inspired by Machu Picchu and they actually recorded a concert there. It could be very interesting and cool to see you analize their music, since it adapts classical folk music from here and neighbouring countries, creating something really unique.

A central circular, circulating stage, it’s just the best. They started off on a normal front stage and moved to the centre after a few songs, and I was completely sold. I'm a massive Kate Bush fan, and of course her duet with Gabriel on "Don't Give Up" is a masterpiece. But... When I heard Paula Cole sing that song with Gabriel instead of Bush, my whole world turned upside down. That performance has become _the_ "original" for me, and the album version with Bush is just the cover. The way Cole sings it, it's like that song was written just for her to deliver to us. You've _got_ to check it out, if you haven't already (someone else already posted the link in a different comment here).

I saw Peter Gabriel on this tour in 1993, the last show in the US in Orlando. It was the most uplifting and spiritual show I had ever seen, or have seen since. Interesting note, that the day before some of PG's tour staff were involved in an accident coming back from a day trip. Before the show PG came on stage to thank those that stopped to help as well as the first responders, and had them at the sound board area on the side stage.

Gabriel knows how to add a special touch of theatre to his performances. I still recall being somewhat awestruck at the closing of his ‘Secret World’ performance in 1993 at the skydome in Toronto. As the final song drew to a close the entire band disappeared into a suitcase in the middle of the stage. Peter Gabriel concerts have a habit of making you as a listener, strangely moved.

I had the pleasure of seeing this tour in the US. It was one of the best concerts I've ever seen, and I've seen Pink Floyd twice. No concussion mortars, no lasers, just dancing and singing and exceptional creativity on display. IIRC, at one end of the venue was the round stage, with a square one at the other end, and a runway between them. At one point the round stage was empty, and a British call box rises up out of the stage. Peter emerges from it, and slowly walks down the runway to the other end. He's trailing something behind him, which turns out to be a rubber band-like tether, which then drags him slowly back to the call box ~ backwards. Just a spectacularly creative night. Excellent choice for a reaction.

I appreciate the sincere passion, but it’s non-stop talking through the whole video - reading the lyrics to us while they’re being sung and we could clearly hear them with some momentary silence from the reviewer. If you don't know the backstory: Years ago, when Peter was going through a painful divorce, his youngest daughter Melanie, just a child, was too young to deal with the painful emotions and reacted by shutting out Peter and refusing to speak to him. Unable to reason with her he wrote COME TALK TO ME to let her know that it wasn't her fault and that he loved her so much. This is so wonderful with this band, thanks for the reaction Doug! Remember Peter's Sky Blue is pending on your list 😉 There's a new album about to be released, and with Manu Katche back in the band, can't wait! He's already released a first song...

Sky Blue: consider doing the version from Growing Up Live. He tells the song's story and it sends shivers down the spine when the Blind Boys of Alabama cut in. Breathtaking version.

Can't get enough of Paula Cole. Fabulous.

Paula Cole was outstanding on that tour. How can you go wrong with David Rhodes and Tony Levin backing you up? Peter is another artist who surrounds himself with virtuoso magicians and gives them a place to shine (like Jeff Beck, may he rest in piece). Wonderful. I have both the CD and the DVD (they are slightly different if you listen close).

I saw this concert live! You canmot rel8ve what we experienced, but you should watch amd delight 8n the DVD. The most stunning amalgamation of music, dance, drama i could ever imagine. PS i saw Henesis in the early days. This seems like the culmination of those artistic influences i witnessed when a masked man sang Watcher of the Skies.

This one is awesome. From the same DVD is another must listen, and that's "Shaking the Tree". Probably my fave.

Doug - Let me express my happiness in finding your channel. Your choice of songs/pieces is sublime. In Your Eyes, Inca Roads and Shine On, You Crazy Diamond? My god, man, you're being magnetized to, and uncovering the musicality behind, one masterpiece after another. I first saw your real time reaction to Inca Roads, which was thrilling. I was friends with Frank Zappa since I was 13 years old, jammed with him at 16, and saw the work behind the pieces of his you've illuminated. Hearing them again, through your ears, made me realize how unbelievably fortunate I was to get to know the guy and hear this music shortly after its inception. I'm also still friends with Peter, who I met when I was Lou Reed's guitarist on the Amnesty International tour in the 80s. We've stayed in touch and I've played his music a bunch. Big props to you for the beautifully curated music education. The fact that you grasp and follow the chordal/harmonic movement & time feel changes is endlessly entertaining, as Frank would say. Hope to meet you in real life one of these days, but thank you for this inspiring work you're doing. Your reactions bring me back to the moment I first heard this stuff. A priceless gift.
