@@enealiviu4797 Great quality on his vid, and I quite like a number of his illustrations, but this video is about 80% accurate. He deleted one comment of mind about a GIANT mistake in it (the you don't need to - and in fact shouldn't - push the string all the way to the fretboard), and there are at least a few others. Dude is going to have trouble playing in 10 years, if he isn't already. You absolutely, positively, 100% do not want to keep the arm still while moving only fingers, even for counterpoint. The arm move should support every note, every time. Not only will it be easier, your speed will increase. If playing counterpoint, the movement will be small, but still quite important.
@dadavidvid6 ай бұрын
Thanks, 80% correct is not bad. Do you play classical guitar? Have you played Bach? If fingers move simultaneously in opposite directions, how can the arm move with them? The arm should move the hand to the average center of the range of a passage or to switch from oblique to parallel, or to switch positions but not to follow each note. All that is for another video. The amount of pressure towards the fretboard’s normal is monitored by the ears according to the quality of sound. The string pressure over the finger is so much more significant that whether we touch or not the fretboard is irrelevant to think about. I’ve played solo more than 4 hour long gigs, not one single muscle hurts. Are you flexing your MCP's? If so, you may be locking your finger's ability to stretch. Trust your finger’s potential and promote their independence!
@arseniyonline12345556 ай бұрын
Only it wouldn't be very useful. Like a solid 40 minute practice would be more useful. The sharp angle of 1st finger hitting the 1st string from the top is also just wrong.

There is a mistake at 3:13. the string should not touch the fretboard, if you do that the intonation is effected, as you are stretching it, (vibrato technique). The finger should be placed upon the fret itself, scalloping can help improve playability, tone and dexterity string bending with vibrato for instance. Again at 5:56 the thumb should hardly touch the neck and in some circumstances where sustain is indicated not at all. The neck should be pulled with the arm toward the body with your abdomen/chest as a fulcrum to your forearm upon the lower bout.
@dadavidvid4 ай бұрын
Thanks for you comments and sharing your knowledge. It's hard to cover every small detail in this long overview. I hardly mention the thumb. I prefer to emphasize the abduction of the fingers and horizontal stretching at the beginner stages. That alone can require more effort and attention than saving energy when pressing on the string.

First, I don't understand how it was even possible to make a free KZbin video with such spectacular graphics throughout. Even on channels with 5 million subscribers, no one goes that far with it. Congratulations on managing that. I hope it didn't put you in debt. I thought some of the basic stuff at the beginning should be useful for teaching. I see that everyone loved the video, but I have to be honest - maybe I wasn't understanding something, but I watched the whole thing and felt like I learned nothing I could use while playing the guitar. It's cool to see the muscles, bones and tendons, etc., really cool, but I feel like seeing it isn't actually helping me. Who knows. Maybe it will be in my head and I'll realize something later. The idea of the third finger being the center was interesting. Maybe I'll get something out of that. Thanks so much for your hard work and amazing presentation.

Since there seems to be a lot of guitarrists and/or medical professionals here, I would love to ask a question. I started playing guitar over 2 years ago when I was 32 and, although I made fast progress, I had to stop due to pain in my Distal Interphalangeal joint in my left hand. It particularly stiffens and hurts when playing a lot of Am, D ou C chords. The sensation is of a dull pain, stiffness and avoidance in wanting to press hard. I since then reviewed my technique, changes the strings for a .10 extra light gauge, lowered the action of the strings and tried some stretching exercises but ultimately nothihg helped and I stopped playing and the pain went completely away. I recently got the itch again and gave it another shot, and yet again, I'm making solid progress and yet the pain came back...I cannot really keep playing like this as I cannot press hard enough to produce clean notes and chords, unless I really force it and play through the pain, but that's never a good idea. I did check with a doctor awhile back and if I'm not mistaken I did an x-ray and it came back normal. So I'm really lost here and I don't know what I could do, but I really want to keep playing guitar, and be able to play pain free.

Sorry to hear my friend. The guitar is physically very demanding for the fingers and there are many things that could injure them. It’s really tough to know what’s going on without seeing your technique and hand posture. I have detected the source of many player’s problems on technical habits and this could be the case. Your pain is on the DIP which finger?

@@dadavidvid I was not expecting a reply so soon and from the creator of this wonderful video, I am very humbled and grateful for your interest. I forgot to mention that the pain comes from the DIP joint of my left index finger and the pain occurs mainly during play but sometimes, depending of the duration of my session, it remains stiff for serveral hours. I do get some relief when I manage to crack the joint in a twisting motion, it releases it and loosen the tightness I feel. I'm 1,76m (5ft 9") tall and play a smaller guitar with a 58cm ( 22.83") scale lenght. Could the smaller scale of my instrument be a factor? I am self taught so perhaps the technique is to blame, even though I always try to pay close attention to it and learn proper technique (it's how I found this video). Again, thank you so much and let me know if I can do anything to provide you with more information, I am very motivated in finding a remedy for this issue, learning guitar has been really good for my mental health and I really want to keep playing.

@@gabzsy4924 my pleasure! It is still hard to tell. The instrument could definitely be a factor. The 1st fret on most guitars demands more pressure than the other frets. The index of the left hand is the one in charge of that fret for the most part. Is it a steel strings instrument or nylon? It could be that the action (distance between strings to the frets) is too high. Maybe we can schedule a brief Zoom call to see what’s going on. You can email me dadavidvid74@gmail.com
