@@SirHairlessI feel the same about MJ and many other legends I couldn’t have the immense pleasure of witnessing their prime success during their lives, and I guess for me the most painful of them all might be Freddie… I’m a big fan of Queen and Freddie will always hold a special place in my heart❤I cried so much when I watched the part of the Bohemian Rhapsody movie when ‘Freddie’ mentioned their epic performance in ‘Rock in Rio 85’, which, according to the movie, Freddie was imagining that the audience couldn’t understand what he was saying on stage until the moment he started to sing "Love of my life"… Then, what happened is one of most beautiful things I’ve ever watched among all concerts in Brazil I’ve known so far (even though Brazilian audience always tend to be very warm and full of love towards performers on stage); if you get curious to see what I’m talking about, you can check the video called ‘Love of my Life - Queen In Rock In Rio 85 - HD’ with this performance🥰

Their evolution videos are so entertaining and such an hommage! I’m sure everybody has at least one fond memory connected with an MJ song. Mine is teaching my singing students a cover of the A cappella MJ version of She’s Out Of My Life by 98 Degrees. That was before Pentatonix. It’s a lovely version. I have always loved vocal arrangements so I’m in choir nerd heaven these days with PTX, HF, VP and Voctave. There are more, of course, but they are my favorite. Cool! That makes sense 👌Not to be a party-pooper here (forgive me) but I think that arranging by ear is the natural way to go 🎶We can think of by ear as meaning "by brain", and it's how we process music before writing it down 😄 Doing things by ear also removes the theory-side of things, at least from my experience, because we just know what sounds good or not without needing to understand about the nitty-gritty side of things, like keys

Ah! My favourite of their "evolution" videos! I love the minimal production of the single take that emphasizes their technical skill and masterful transitions. Thank you for another superb analysis. I liked your reach for the antonym of "ambiguous" to "biguous," but surely it lies in the opposite direction, as "unambiguous." Creativity with language is a guilty pleasure of mine, including such non-words as "promptu" and "ert." The kinship of music and language is demonstrated once again!

Another great analysis, Sir! As always, your joy of music shows on your face. I literally grew up with MJ and The Jackson Five (he's only a couple of years older than I am) and hearing their older music immediately brings back fond memories of my siblings and I watching their TV show. All of us singing along and dancing.....ahhhh those were the days!! I love how you are working your way through their work starting with the "Avi Era", but I've been wondering.....How hard is it to not just dive head first into their repertoire like I'm sure most Pentaholics have, instead of meticulously choosing songs one at a time to react to? As someone who has followed them since the Sing=Off, I just can't get enough!! I can't imagine going days at a time without listening, knowing there are hundreds of videos out there waiting for me!! I have to say that before you jump from the Avi Era to Matt's introduction, it's almost a rite of passage for KZbin reactors to have a go at their version of "Hallelujah". The number of views is creeping up to 1 BILLION, and when you decide it's time to join the masses, you'll see why. Many people, including myself, feel that it's the song that put acapella groups on the map and propelled Pentatonix and other groups like them into the spotlight. Thank you again, Sir, for another entertaining and illuminating reaction and analysis. Even after all these years, you still manage to teach me something new, or remind me of theory I've forgotten 🥰

Great question! At first it was insanely hard, but very quickly I became too busy to even think about it really! And after a few weeks of resisting temptation, it becomes super easy So now I have my list of reactions to do in the future for various artists, and there's plenty of other music out there for me to listen to in my spare time! Luckily I'm weird enough that I can listen to songs on repeat for days, so a few songs can get me through a week easily "Hallelujah" is on my list and seems to be the most-requested one. I'm thinking of saving it for a milestone or something, but we'll see

As always, appreciate the reaction and analysis - these two (Music and MJ) are my favorites of the Evolution of... videos, glad you were able to react to both of them! The biggest difference between the Official Video and Popspring performances of EoMJ is that in the latter, since it's a concert performance, there's some organized choreo going along with the music - but it's hard to tell a difference in the music, since both are basically one-take live performances, and PTX excels at performing their music live! Love the little extras!

I'm in the rabbit hole of Sir Hairless reacting to Pentatonix.. I am 64 years old, and not a musician, but a great appreciator of the mystery of how music makes us feel, and with classical piano lessons as a child, your reactions are so satisfying in explaining how the music works. And then its also wonderful to see your reactions to songs that also moved me. This was definitely baby Pentatonix. Once their record company dropped them, they started doing these one take, no frills pieces. Sometimes they used a couch. These early days gained them a huge fanbase and launched them into stardom. I've always loved this one as the Jackson 5 was one of the first albums I bought with my own money. (the first was the Aquarius album by the 5th Dimension) I think I was about 15 years old.

This was good fun.. I think you knew the words to more MJ than you’d thought! I’ve read that for these recordings they will run through maybe 4 takes, then choose the best one . For Popspring you still get the live performance but they’ve added a bit of choreo… and I know we’ve mentioned the other 3 songs in Popspring are originals, but they each feature different members.. Cracked is very Scott-forward, then Evo of MJ, then Can’t Sleep Love which sounds very Mitch & Scott influenced (very Superfruit vibe) and a special Mitch moment, lastly Water which is very Kirsten forward.. think she and Kevin wrote it. Anyway, I think that’s the order of songs.. I’ll thank someone ahead of time if I’ve messed that up. All said, just very good fun. And speaking of good fun, thank you for sharing some your musically creative endeavors.. we’d look forward to you continuing with sharing these personal gems! Appreciate you tackling another Evolution Of.. they are great, looking forward to you getting to more of them, along with their regular releases. (and Superfruit etc personal projects)🎶🌟

You can see and hear exactly what each person is doing. Or so I thought! What exactly is your education and training? You never cease to amaze me with your ability and skill at hearing and breaking down every note and passage in every song...and that comes from much more than great headphones! Educate me, please! The PopSpring Concert adds so much more to this number with them dancing and playing off the audience rather than just to a camera. And the other three numbers they perform are all PTX originals...and *LIVE* !!!!! I look forward to that analysis soon.

I know about your situation of course (and I hope everything is going well!), but I was wondering why, from your perspective, PTX might be different to VoicePlay or HomeFree, for example? @@SirHairless I can do some HF and VP if I'm familiar with the song, but it's more about the annunciation and the ability to lip read at the same time, as well as the layering. Less layers = better results for me. PTX tends to do "block" versions of videos and I can really focus on their facial expressions and lips. By block I mean Daft Punk, 90s Dance, etc. They really zoom in to the facial features. I typically start with Scott and focus on just his mouth and face. Watch and watch until I can put the lips, vibration, and lyrics together. Then I move on to the next person until I've figured out all the parts. Closed captioning doesn't always work for music, so it can be a long process. Instead of words popping up, it will say something like (music) or (singing). Basically I use CC to understand what you are saying, not for the videos. Even with PTX, there are some songs I'm not able to pull apart. "Can't Hold Us" is one example. I've gotten most of it, but it's so fast and there are not a lot of close ups. Love the song, love the beat, just can't get all the words matched to the music. "Be My Eyes" is another one where I can't separate Scott and Matt because I can't see their lips. I've got the other parts, just can't get the bottom. Songs like "Royals," "Sound of Silence" or "The Prayer" all have nice, tight shots and hold them for a bit. The blocking is a big plus because I don't have a TV or PC; I watch all the videos on my cell phone. I need to see those lips, lol. In general, when I'm trying to speak to people, I need to see the lips, they need to face me and any accent changes the dynamics completely as the sound doesn't match the lips. HF has a lot of twang that complicates the listening. When I have to work that hard to figure it out, I tend to get frustrated and give up. Thanks for asking. Your kindness is appreciated. Most people aren't interested or don't bother to try and understand. I'm a senior that's been in a wheelchair since 1991 from MS, most people don't even see me, let alone CARE enough to ask. You remind me so much of my oldest son, same type of heart. I'm truly touched.
@theresadeuschle85009 ай бұрын
I forgot.... Beards. Ugh! Beards make lip reading a lot harder. Tight beards are fine but big beards with mustaches... Nope. 🤣 HF uses a lot of side views. VP doesn't mouth clearly enough, plus the majority of their shots are further away. I do keep trying though.

@@SirHairlessyes he will have done. He has been their principal arranger since they formed in 2011. The members all get involved now too but when these early ones were arranged it was always Ben Bram who led on it.

Once you have seen this video a dozen times, as most Pentaholics have, you know exactly what song is coming next. It's like one very long, crazy good song! All of the Evolution videos are like that for me, because they have put them together so seamlessly. I am looking forward to when you get around to the PopSpring concert. It is longer, but really worth seeing all 4 of the songs in the video at once. Also, I think the MJ and Beyonce Evolutions are two of their best. I am not a huge Beyonce fan, but the intricacies of that medley are amazing.

Yes you definitely need to watch the pop spring concert. Also newer ones, The Prayer, The making of The Evergreen album is how they made the arrangements. You would love it. I love your reactions ❤ Kiss from a Rose, Amazing Grace, there are so many.

I didn´t grow up with MJs music, due to the fact that he was only 2,5 years old when I was born but I love his music anyway. I also like this concept of medleys, this was very popular in the early 1980s by the group Stars on 45 and PTX has great medley arrangements. And a tribute to the king of pop - by the way Dimash has also a video called A Tribute to MJ -

Thanks for letting me know! I didn't know Dimash had a video called A Tribute To MJ - I've added it to my list 👌🏽

... has to breath ... unlike Mitch in the Carol of the Bells!!!!! WA HA HAAAAAAAAH!! Thx Sir Hairless - it is 2.45 am down here in Cornwall and you have just made me cackle rather loudly. Somehow I don't think my neighbours OR my family will be equally appreciative.

WOAH your reaction to Utopia is a second longer than this one. I wonder if that was purposeful haha! You are not one to leave things to the odds, are you? hehehe Incredible reaction! I love Pentatonix :O

I could be wrong but I think Scott, Kristy and Mitch are only 19 at this point. Avi and Keven are older but the other three had only recently graduated from high school.

That was fun - I loved his music especially BAD, a favorite, not sure I heard that but they were moving fast. I love that you said it’s was probably more complicated than it looked - lol. I thought it looked impossible😁. I think you could have been in that one. I think you might be able to give Mitch a run for his money.🤷🏼♀️

How funny that your least favourite part is probably my favorite part. You've been hit by etc... It might be because I looooove the choreo they used on that part so it really enhances it for me!

Pentatodrix please, On Todrick Halls channel. TH is an amazing voice talent as well.
@LindaVernon9 ай бұрын
Oh yes, You've seen enough of Pentatonix, including Daft Punk, to really appreciate it. Todrick Hall apparently told Scott that he had a very hard time figuring ourt who was singing what when they get to the part where they are all singing different songs at the same time.

so in a performance like this, can the voices still be pitch corrected?
@SirHairless9 ай бұрын
They could be! But they're not in this case 👌There are some cases of tuning not being quite there in this medley, which is honestly perfectly expected from a truly live performance. PTX perform at such a high level it's ridiculous, quite frankly, so it's not worth pointing out these tiny non-perfect things that happen. Nothing live is ever truly perfect, right?! One of the biggest issues with modern technology and music is pitch-correction - it could be applied to literally anything and it would be nearly impossible for the human ear to tell People would need to plug the audio into specialist software etc. This is why I love groups like PTX - they continuously prove their ability to perform well live through live shows, private performances, tours etc. - so even when pitch correction is applied to their studio versions, I don't think anyone should mind ☺
