I have learnt more about John Tavener in 15 minutes than I've known about him in my entire life......... incredible research. These uploads are an absolute credit to You Tube.

Over the last few months I've been listening to Tavener's music more actively, I think that especially his Lament for Jerusalem and A Hymn to the Mother of God are incredibly good!

In case you're wondering about the background music for the first 3 minutes or so, it is John Tavener's "The Lamb".

At a time when Tavener is under attack and supposedly out of fashion it is great to find such a fullsome presentation.

In what way is tavener under attack? I love his music and don’t understand why anyone would attack him
@Listenerandlearner8702 жыл бұрын
@@SaintBeatrix i don't know either. He is out of fashion. Some commentors attack him.

Very interesting video! Unfortunately the only available recording of The Veil of the Temple is an abridged version. It would be interesting to hear the full seven hours!
@ClassicalNerd4 жыл бұрын
I would love to hear it too!

Fitting with minimalism (kind of) should do a video about modern film composition eg, Jonny Greenwood, Mica Levi, Oneohtrix point never. Love your stuff !
@ClassicalNerd4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, "modern film composition" is simply too broad of a topic for me to cover, and I'm not in the habit of covering any individual composer whose career is still ongoing.

I remember adding (and still waiting for) Howard Hanson to your list years ago! :)

It's an unfortunate reality that those far down the list won't have videos made for them for a long while, but when you're dealing with 346 requests, it gets difficult.

The minimalism of John Tavener is actually very different from American Minimalism. Yes, he used repetition a lot. But he used also a lot serialism. Zodiacs, for example, is both minimalistic and serialistic. But because he used more consonant intervals, it seems almost tonal. He used also some modal.

Not all of the books on the current set are technically mine (some are my roommate's), and I've expanded my collection since this video, but I did do something like this a while back, two sets ago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3_PhIBvf7yXobs
