I have to ask this again (rhetorically) - how could ancient engravers achieve that staggering level of detail that we never saw matched in Europe till at least the 17th century. Absolutely amazing. Extremely interesting Hellenistic history.

I really like how these bigger coins gave the artists space for more detail. Drachms of Heliokles I look identical albeit of lesser detail

I just started learning about them too! Some of my favorite coins are the Eukratides with the weird Kettle Hat that looks like the British wore during WW1, then the coins from Demetrios I with his elephant headdress. What is cool about the cultural synchronism as you talked about is the first depictions of Buddha. There is a statue of Buddha with Hercules next to him with some Greek inscription. Also Zeus thunderbolt looks a lot like the Vajra from Buddhism and Hinduism.

I appreciate it when you explore coins from a variety of different ancient kingdoms. I have two from the Indian region: a bilingual coin from the Indo-Greek kingdom and a gold Indian coin from medieval times (Govinda Chandra Deva).

I'm still trying to put together some Greek and Roman coins in my collection. Now you introduce interesting Greek/Indian coins to collect. So much to learn about through numismatics. Coins, videos, books. A lifetime of learning. I will need to look out for one of these.

Wonderful seeing more Baktrian content on here, their tetradrachms are simply stunning! The only Baktrian coin I currently have is a slightly corroded tetradrachm of Eukratidese I, but I would love to get a nice tet of Antimachus I someday. For now though, I'll be buying the book before the coin.

It is particularly important to buy books and study this area and time period in detail, as the number of different kings and states involved can be quite hard to wrap one's head around

correction at 7:25, kharoshthi is a script used to write a kind of prakrit (probably pali or gandhari), which would've been the local language

I have been interested in the Indo-Greek kingdoms since reading Milinda Panha years ago. I have drachmas of kings Menander, Antimachus II and Antialcidas. And the beautiful tetradrachm of Euthydemus II. Further sequels with Indian coins will be welcomed.

Hi Leo! What an amazing example!!! I love Bactrian coins, but I don't have any tetradrachm... I think I will get at least a more or less decent Eukratides some day... it is the most affordable and perhaps the most representative type of Bactrian tetra...
@ClassicalNumismatics

Neither do I, for now I have to make do with a couple of indo-greek drachmae, and a very charming, albeit tiny Eukratides Obol

I have a Kushan coin from Vima Takto, and the obverse design is distinctly Bactrian in style. With the ruler having the same hairstyle, same clothing, and same head dress as the coins of the Indo-Greeks and earlier Bactrians. It even uses Greek legends on the obverse. The reverse, however, depicts a king on horseback, most likely Vima Takto himself, showing a fascinating transition between the Indo-Greek designs and the unique Kushan coinage.

Thats true. Its also very remarkable to think that a lot of what we know about the kings of this area comes directly from numismatic evidence
