The long neck Aurelian and Probus etc. I think were made that way to show that the coins were so much bigger now we can fill the space.

Most of my Roman coins are from the 240s-430s, I love them so much, even with their sometimes crude appearance. It's funny to think the people who spent these coins thought they were near worthless, and now I look at them with adoration, as if I am gollum looking at his precious.

It's kind of like how we view coins like pennies in the US today, basically worthless, but maybe one day a thousand years from now these coins will gain more value the way late Roman coins have.

@@colbystearns5238 Makes me wonder if the Romans had silly rhymes like we do, "Find a penny heads up, all day you'll have good luck"

I always said that the Roman Empire was a strongly presidential Republic in the Early Empire, a military dictatorship in the 3rd Century AD, and a monarchy in the Late Empire

I bought an uncleaned coin online for $15, and have spent about 4 hours over the past few days teasing out the name "PHILIP". It's surprisingly relaxing, and I have no regrets. :)

I love 3rd century coins! Such a wide range of styles and even a high quality denarius from the Severan Dynasty can be had for more affordable prices than those from the previous centuries, seeing as how I have two denarii and they're all from this era. I'm also just fascinated by how much the coin quality deteriorated just within Gallienus' time in power alone. I'm thinking of getting a few coins from his reign to compare and contrast. I find this era of Roman history to be one of the most intriguing to learn about just because it's so rich with drama and yet people like Aurelian don't get talked about as much as Julius Caesar.

I showed several coins of Max Thrax to a doctor friend. His diagnosis: acromegaly. The wrestler André the Giant also had acromegaly and topped out at 7 feet, 4 inches (2.24 meters).

I've got a particularly quirky denarius of Elagabalus, wreathed and "horned", with the emperor sacrificing on the reverse. The contrast between the disciplined execution of the engraver/minter and the Emperor's exploits is striking to me, even with this lunatic running around you have men producing things of exquisite beauty. Beyond that I've got a bunch from the 3rd and 4th centuries, mostly bronzes; my most notable was an Ulpia Severina antoninianus but I gave it away as a gift, it was quite lovely while I had it.

Like (as I suppose) most collectors, I started my collection of Roman coins some 35 years ago trying to get at least one specimen of each ruler or empress that issued coins during the existence of the empire. 3rd century coins were among the first ones I could get hands on. In France the emperors of the gaelic empire were quite accessible even though with the exceptions of Marius, Laelianus and Aureoulus that I am missing until now. When E-bay rose there were also some quite interesting offers and among them many nice coins from the 3rd century. For me some of the most interesting are short lived rulers and usupers that in spite of their short reign let us quite many coins as Quintillus, Tacitus, the Carus family. Tacitus seemed to have aso some issues with quit realistic portraites.

Im am really interested in the post roman European coinage in the 6th century. It seems no larger quantities of silver coins were struck in Europe, except for the byzantine empire. Can you do a vid about that dark century pls 🙏

My Gallienus coins are some of my absolute favorites precisely *because* they are soooo crappy. Nearly all of them have huge cracks, poor artwork, really off-center stamping, no attempt at all to try and line the obverse and the reverse up, and one of the ones I have is so thin that it almost reminds me of a dogtag; if it were any thinner you might almost have been able to shave with it. "Scraps of copper" is right. But: this complete phone-it-in production is a visible result of the history. That's what I kind of like about these coins. You can *see* the conditions of the era reflected right there in your hand. That crack didn't come later; this coin looked like this right off the die. This one here isn't even round. And so on. These guys didn't care, and it shows.

Prices on many 3rd. Century coins are still reasonable. Great for newer collectors. 4th.Century even more affordable. I have been collecting Roman since 1963. While I am a knowledgeable collector, compared to this Gentleman, I am just a novice!
