I saw this rare Chrysler on your C10 video yesterday and was hoping for a review. In the fall of 1979 my dad took me on a helicopter ride at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, as we flew over the harbor area we saw the Chrysler storage area, 10's of thousands of these beasts in all sorta of fleet colors/version were parked, stored, waiting buyers that may have never come, my dad said he could see them rusting from the air!!!. Nice to see this survivor.

Yes, Chrysler used to do the "pull" system of inventory. That is "we made it, now go sell it". Rather than the 'pull system" where the dealers order what they want for stock, or get a customer order and they are "pushed" into production from demand (an order). Chrysler's system didn't work and left a lot of unsold cars that had to be dumped at bargain prices. But no one wanted them by 1979. LOL.

The time, 1979: The place: Fred Oakley Chrysler, located at 612 North Zang, Dallas, TX (which appears to be an apartment complex or mixed use building). That is where a middle age couple who "made it' in life would have bought their luxurious 1979 Chrysler New Yorker 5th Ave. A car that would run until the 1981 model year when then in 1982, the 5th Ave would move to the 'M" body platform, which shared its' roots and chassis from the Aspen and Volare (and Dart/Duster and all its' variants through 1976 before it). There were 54,640 New Yorkers made in 1979, like you said about 25% were made as 5th Avenues. Total production from 1979 to 1981 was 74,701 New Yorkers. 1979: The year of Three Mile Island's nuclear accident, the Iranian hostage crisis, Jimmy Carter the "Peanut Farmer" in the White House, the 2nd gas crisis, high unemployment, stagflation, the height of disco music (including the infamous Disco Sucks rally and related T-shirts), as well as general malaise in the country, due to us just getting done with the Vietnam war in 1975. Back in 1979, you would hear Rod Rodney say on the Price is Right, "C'mon down Benny, you can win this new Chrysler New Yorker 5th Ave, supplied by Fred Oakley of Dallas, TX!!!!" LOL. Also in 1979, Lee Iacocca was the head of Chrysler, having taken over for John Riccardo who would have been the CEO when this car was on the drawing board probably by 1974-1975. By 1979, it was long in the tooth, but I don't think Iacocca had much choice, he was running out of both time and money fast. One of the reasons Chrysler was "saved" was that back then they had military contracts for things like tanks and the thought was national security was at risk if they went under. I'm sure also part of had to do with no lawmaker wanted to be the one say "Yea, I let them go bankrupt, so you're out of luck with a job". I think base MSRP was about $10k, plus options as others have said. Here he is asking for money: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZzHp6x7oruqpsk I digress, here we go: VIN is T for Newport/New Yorker, P for Premium price class, 42 for four door "B" pillar hardtop, K for 360 V8 with two barrel equipped with the "reliable" Lean Burn system, 9 for 1979 model year, A for Lynch Road, MI assembly , and the rest is the production sequence. The Lynch Road assembly plant made these through 1981 and then closed in April 1981. Production capacity was then moved to Newark, DE (where the Volare and Aspen were made previously). Good find on the tools. Any good USA tool will work for spares. I just went through a tool box I bought for $40. Loaded with specialty Snap On tools---the person I bought it from is the daughter of a now deceased air plane mechanic at NYC"s JFK airport. I'm going back for the rest of what's there soon. Oddly enough they had an "M" body 5th Ave (I think an '83) back in the day, but the car was gone when I went to buy the tools, but remnants of parts for it are still around the garage.... The MDH (month/date/hour) shows that this car was built on June 25, 1979 (a Monday) at 23:00 hours, or 11:00 PM. In June 1979, most of us were either finished with school or dreaming of summer being done with school in a few days. Those were when you had 1/2 days to turn in your books, get your report cards, finish up paperwork for the end of the semester, set up for September and then usually there was a picnic or celebration in the park. You then went home, put away your school things for summer and got into "summer mode" and what you were going to do for the summer--- planned vacations, paper routes, and whatever else you did back in 1979 for summer fun. That carpet could have been original because back then "plush carpet" or "shag style" carpet was all the rage in luxury cars. My 10th Anniversary Trans Am (also in 1979) had 20oz "Tiffany" carpet which was shag and made by JP Stevens of Taylors, SC. That company is now part of a company that makes wallpaper. LOL. The New Yorker came with 20oz cut pile carpeting, similar to what my 10th Anniversary had (aka "shag" style). Whoa Nelley, the exterior color on this is ONLY for a 5th Avenue, it was called Designer's Cream & Designer's Beige. No, the 360 with a two barrel was the standard engine for this car. The 318 was a "no charge" downgrade (much the same way the 301 Pontiac was in 1979 versus the standard 403 Olds or the optional Pontiac 400 in the F body). The 360 V8 with four barrel was optional. Here you go for the brochure for 1979: www.xr793.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/1979-Chrysler-New-Yorker.pdf Chrysler had to have a car like this to compete with the GM and Ford offerings. The problem in 1979? GM still owned the domestic market, being the dominant leader and also being able to "weather the storm" better than the others. Unique? Yes. Rare? Yes, today. Desirable? Perhaps. But, as Blue Eyes would often come on after a Yankee game, "Start spreading the news....New York, New York....."

@@garymckee8857 Sure. Yes, you had an "M" body Lebaron that had an "F" body chassis essentially. Same vehicle from 1977 to 1981, then with the '82 model year it became a front wheel drive "K" car variant. The K car and their spinoffs were the work of Hal Sperlich. He was a genius and his keen use of that chassis for virtually everything Chrysler allowed them to offer a lot of models with common parts.

I would gather by 1982, many were traded in (at a real steep loss) for something smaller. It had to be a problem getting fuel for one of these in 1979. Customers that owned them weren't that well off that they couldn't care. Plus it wasn't the money that was the issue, it was getting fuel. However, I knew people that worked at gas stations back then and supply wasn't the issue. My friend that worked at Sunoco in Brooklyn, NY said, "we always had fuel, it wasn't a supply problem".

Lovely r body 79-81. Sister to Newport, St Regis and Gran fury. Wb is 118. 7 , last of the big midsize Chrysler's, about the size of a Coronet. Love these. Most Gran furys ended up as fleet or squad cars. Power was 318 or 360. I think you could get a slant six in a Gran fury but that is way too small. This car does a guest appearance in the 1980 flick used cars. I can't wait to see what Google user says about it. This is a pillored hardtop like a Ford.

The 318 was an economy option, rated just 135 hp. The 195hp 360 4bbl was optional and included true dual exhausts and cats. Those R bodies all had aluminum bumpers where the chrome would peel badly. 360 "Lean Burn"...whew, that brings back bad memories. My Cordoba had that accursed piece of plastic - after rebuilding the carb., & doing some other tuneup work, I wondered why it was unplugged by the previous owner, so I plugged it in. All of a sudden, the engine started stumbling, & black smoke from trying to run rich flowed out of her exhaust...I immediately unplugged it, unbolted it from the air cleaner, & tossed it in the trash. @@ClassicRideSociety Is it kind of slow in the yards in North Texas this time of year? I'm thinking that spending hours wrenching and lugging heavy ass shit exposed in that heat is just something that a lot of people will not do.

@@kennethsouthard6042 that may play a role in it but this yard is also not in a big city. So they dont get lots of people there like the pick n pull yards in the Dallas/FT Worth metroplex

@@231gnx Correct. The NYPD had Grand Fury cars likely due to the "lowest bidder" scenario especially in the 1970s. Although, NYPD had a mix of cars in the 1970s, including Pontiacs for a time.

Yes, the 360 V8 with a two barrel was the standard engine, the 318 was a downgrade credit and the 360 with four barrel was an option: www.xr793.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/1979-Chrysler-New-Yorker.pdf

I decoded it already.

LOL. If you want to see a decoding marathon, go over to Cowboy Car Crushing's channel and look at the one where I decode all the classic cars he finds in that yard where he provides the trim tags. I "created" the VINs based on what he posts from the tag. I worked OT on that one. LOL.

I would definitely grab the 360, they're very much in demand in hot rod circles. I wouldn't care if they crushed the rest of it---it might be rare, but it sure is ugly lol
