I know you mentioned that your students might be fine with it but I just thought I’d mention that as a Black parent I would feel really uncomfortable if my child was hearing, “Call the Cops” casually in a classroom setting because the interactions that people of color have with cops aren’t always positive and children are much more aware of this nowadays.

First, LOVE your vlogs and your channel! I don’t want this to come off in the wrong way or as condescending (it is NOT! You’re amazing!) You obviously know your students best as well. I have also used the acronym COPS for editing in the past but have been trying to make more of an effort to be reflective about my teaching practices and think about if they are sensitive/inclusive to all of my students’ experiences. I have also been learning more about trauma informed teaching (highly recommend!) For my students I felt it was better for me to no longer use the COPS acronym or the phrase “call the cops”. Again, no judgement, just wanted to throw that idea out there in case it was helpful for you to consider. 😉

I'm in my final semester before I graduate with my Bachelor of Education. With the whole learning from home, and my final teaching round being cancelled, I am stressed out to the max. I know we're going to get a lot of support next year being first year (covid) teachers, however, there's just areas and things that I don't think I'm prepared for. I am doing my best to do some internet PD on the weekends, but I know there's gaps and it's scary. Your videos always get uploaded at the right time and I am reminded about how fun it is and how happy I remember feeling when I am in the classroom. I love that your are so honest with yourself and you share your struggles, because it makes it real. Thank you for all that you do. :)

Good luck!! I thought I wouldn’t be prepared to teach as well, but once you’re in the classroom it starts to feel natural.

Totally love watching your set up videos! I am currently teaching from home instead of my classroom-third grade. The piles of things I’m making are growing too-makes me so happy to have new things when we go back!

I’ve taught second grade for 13 years (and counting) and I totally feel you on the classroom library! I’ve given up trying to organize the picture books. They go on a shelf, hopefully “standing up nice and tall” versus “laying down.” 😊

Shelly! I’m so excited to see your videos again! I feel like with all the craziness, last year was kind of robbed from us. This is my junior year in college ( I’m going for my EC-6 degree). I’m also working as a Paraprofessional this school year! Watching your videos gives me hope for this school year!!!

Hey! Love your channel! Been watching since you taught 3rd grade! I’m currently getting my Masters in Elementary Ed, and one course I’m taking is Culturally Responsive Teaching. I would recommend you looking into it. The “Call the COPS” phrase is catchy, but I feel like there is another phrase to use that is more culturally appropriate for these times. Just something to think about. Even if your demographic is predominantly white, it is still good to think about what they are hearing at home about cultural events. Love your channel, and I trust your teaching choices!

I'm catching up on your videos, but you could also add weather to your calendar area. When I did 3rd in the classroom, we made graphs each month and then kept them to compare at the end of the year. We made a bar graph for the type of weather and a line graph for high/low temperature of each day.

Literally the classroom library is the bane of my existence! I stopped trying to keep it organized by category. My one rule is it has to be put back with the spine facing out and not smashed over another book. We literally spend time our first week learning how to separate the books on the shelf so one can be put back between. If you can't separate the books that means there is no space and you need to find a different spot. That seems to work for me!

I absolutely LOVE your videos. You give me so many ideas. Something I've wondered: Do you think that the "call the cops" thing could be triggering for some students if they have negative interactions with the real cops? I do not know the answer, so I'm not asking you to change anything. I do not know the demographics of the school you are in, but it's just something I was thinking and wanted to hear other's thoughts. Especially in the times we're living in right now. Thanks so much for sharing your classroom set ups with us! :)

I definitely thought about this! My old school I wouldn't have used this, however, there isn't a negative association with this phrase at my current site :)

I HIGHLY suggest not labeling picture book bins. I teach 1st and you are so right...they never go back where they should. My life has been so much easier when they just put them back in any bin I do keep the ones I’m reading separate and they know they can not touch those!

I like that you use a thing in writing called cops. In the uk or at least in Scotland we use a thing called VCOP which is Vocabulary, Connectives, opening, punctuation.

i really like the number talks but would there be any issue of students just writing what others wrote?
@naugirl54 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I was thinking of ways around that, like a sticky note flap with their name on it. But then, I was thinking that I didn’t really care; because that student needs to be able to explain how they got their equation for the “talk” part of number talks. If they just copy, they won’t be able to explain. But eventually they’ll have the ability to find an equation themselves.
@EarlyEDventures4 жыл бұрын
Exactly what she said below!! At first, I won't really care if they copy what others write because the richness comes in the conversation afterward. This will actually allow the students who are lower in math to feel confident, even if it means looking at peers work

this comment seems really random but i was wondering if you had any advice for someone being moved from teacher to a co-teacher? i was a fourth grade teacher last year (my dream grade) and this year i've been demoted (at least, it FEELS like a demotion) to a third grade co-teacher. to clarify, co-teaching in this sense is not SpEd related, just two teachers sharing a class of students and trading off subjects. we're also somewhat departmentalized, so i'll teach other grades from time to time as well. anyway, i really like my co-teacher, she's a great teacher and teammate, but i can't help but feel like i'm being treated as someone disposable by being teamed up with a far-more experienced teacher who def doesn't need me around, which makes me very very nervous and sad because i want to stay at the school i'm at and this is my last probation year before i can sign a permanent contract. this is very long and ramble-y, but i'm still trying to cope with the loss of "control" or just the loss of independence. if you, or any other commenters, have any advice on how to deal with this i'd really really appreciate it!
@EarlyEDventures4 жыл бұрын
I am so sorry!! We don't have co-teachers in my district, so I don't know if I have any specific advice. The only advice I can really give is to stand up for yourself! Don't be afraid to speak up, share ideas, etc. with your co-teacher. Your admin will see that and hopefully next year you will be back on your own.

I don't know if its better in person but that numberline is very hard to read! Don't feel the need to use rainbow when teaching younger students - it might be more readable and useful if all the numbers were black except the 5s and 10s for emphasis on the benchmarks of number relationships.
