Enjoyed this. Not used the Cambrian line because I live in the wrong part of Wales, but I hope to one day. Your pronunciation of Llanfair PG was spot on

Expectation: Whales Reality: *Sheep* Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu in New Zealand looking at Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch: *"Finally, a worthy opponent! Our battle will be legendary!"* If you want to know why "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch" is called such, it means "St. Mary's Church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio near the red cave". The original name of the medieval township whose boundaries is now the village was named Pwllgwyngyll or "the hollow of the white hazel". The parish name was recorded as Llanfair y Pwllgwyngyll ('Llanfair' meaning "St Mary's church") as far back as the mid 16th century. The long name was contrived in 1869 as a publicity stunt to give the station the longest name of any railway station in Great Britain. The name was created by a local tailor, whose name he did not confide, letting the secret die with him. This is what added a reference to a whirlpool, one in the Menai Strait known as the Swellies and to the small chapel of St. Tysilio on a nearby island The "gogogoch" was inspired by the Cardiganshire parish of Llandysiliogogo, rather than by any local features. But the name of that Welsh village and the hill in New Zealand are still nothing compared to Bangkok's ceremonial name! While we all know Thailand's capital as Bangkok, Thais call the city Krung Thep, but its full ceremonial name is: "Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayutthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Phiman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit", or written in Thai as "กรุงเทพมหานคร อมรรัตนโกสินทร์ มหินทรายุธยา มหาดิลกภพ นพรัตนราชธานีบูรีรมย์ อุดมราชนิเวศน์มหาสถาน อมรพิมานอวตารสถิต สักกะทัตติยวิษณุกรรมประสิทธิ์". In English, all of this means "The city of angels, the great city, the residence of the Emerald Buddha, the impregnable city (of Ayutthaya) of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarn". 168 letters long!

Like all other public services in Wales, TfW is officially bilingual. But that doesn't stop when they cross the border into England. It's really one of the only cases where you'll see/hear the Welsh-language names for places in England. For example, Manchester is Manceinion. TfW manages every railway station in Wales, but they also manage 25 stations in England (and stop at quite a few more).

I have taken the Cambrian to Porthmadog. It's an amazingly pretty line, especially when the sun is out. The request stops never seem to end. The trains can become extremely crowded in tourist season, which suggest that either the frequency is too low, or the capacity of the EMUs too small.

A wonderful video about Whales. What amazing scenery. The Transport for Wales logo sort of reminds me of the MBTA. Getting down the pronunciations of all the Welsh towns looks like a real challenge for an outsider. That's really terrrible about that tragic collision between the too trains. I think the DMUs that can easily be split like that could offer some real lessons to improve service on U.S. routes. Thanks for sharirng.

Cambrian comes from Cambria, a Latinized form of Wales's Welsh name Cymru. The name wasn't used during the Roman period. After the Anglo-Saxon settlement of much of Britain, a territorial distinction developed between the new Anglo-Saxon kingdoms and the remaining Celtic British kingdoms. Latin being the primary language of scholarship in Western Christendom, medieval writers commonly used either the older term Britannia, as the territory still inhabited by Britons, or Wallia, a term derived from Old English, to refer to Wales. Cambria was first attested in Geoffrey of Monmouth in the 12th century as an alternative to both of these, since Britannia was now ambiguous and Wallia a foreign import but remained rare until late in the Middle Ages. According to Geoffrey's pseudohistory, the Trojan Brutus had three sons with his wife Innogen, among whom he divided his lands after landing in Britain and subduing Gogmagog. His eldest son, Locrinus, received the land between the rivers Humber and Severn, which he called Loegria (Latinization of medieval Welsh Lloegyr, later to be most of England). His youngest son, Albanactus, got the lands beyond the Humber, which took from him the name of Albany (Scotland; which is Albania in Latin; Scotland in Scottish Gaelic is Alba). The second son, Camber, was bequeathed everything beyond the Severn, which was called after him Cambria. More Wales facts: Pwllheli means "salt-water pool". Sheep farming in Wales is an ancient husbandry activity in rural parts where the climate and soil conditions were not suitable for growing crops other than oats. The activity is documented from medieval times, by which time white sheep probably imported by the Romans had interbred with native dark-fleeced types to produce varieties of Welsh Mountain sheep. Initially, sheep were bred for their milk and fleeces, rather than their meat. By the 13th century, large flocks of sheep were owned by Cistercian abbeys and monasteries, such as those at Strata Florida, Margam, Basingwerk and Tintern. The current Welsh flag was officially adopted in 1959 and is based on an old royal badge used by British kings and queens since Tudor times. The colors of green and white are the colors of the Tudor family, a standard featuring the red dragon was used by Henry VII (who was of Welsh descent; he was the first monarch of the House of Tudor) at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, after which it was carried in state to St Paul's Cathedral, and a dragon added as a supporter of the Tudor royal arms. The red dragon appears in the ancient Mabinogion story of Lludd and Llefelys where it is confined, battling with an invading white dragon, at Dinas Emrys. The story continues in the Historia Brittonum, written around AD 829, where Gwrtheyrn, King of the Britons is frustrated in attempts to build a fort at Dinas Emrys. He is told by a boy, Emrys, to dig up two dragons fighting beneath the castle. He discovers the white dragon representing the Anglo-Saxons, which is soon to be defeated by the red dragon of Wales. The Royal Mint in Llantrisant employs over 700 people, and works 24 hours a day, 52 weeks a year. They produce 90 million coins a week, which is almost 5 billion coins a year, and they are a very big exporter. The Mint produces coins and medals for 60 countries apart from the UK.

I rode that line in February, it was anything but uneventful. Was heading to Aberystwyth but the service was terminated at Machynlleth due to flooding on the line ... then the rail replacement bus was delayed by an hour due to a farmers protest haha. Did manage to make it to Aberystwyth and was able to take our return train all the way back to Shrewsbury. Also Eurostar doesn't use ETCS, they use the French TVM signaling system, same system the TGV uses. That's why Eurostar between London and Paris is jokingly referred to as "LGV Nord-Ouest"

One thing I would love to do is to travel on the Cambrian Line and go to all the heritage railways on/near the line. So that would be: Welshpool and Llanfair Corris (it's not far from Machynlleth) Vale of Rheidol Talyllyn Fairbourne Ffestiniog Welsh Highland (Porthmadog) Welsh Highland (Caernarfon) It would probably take at least a week, if not slightly longer! Admittedly, I've never been on the Cambrian Line itself, and the only steam railways on the line I haven't been on before are the Corris Railway, Fairbourne Railway and the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway (the one right by Porthmadog station). I think your pronunciations were pretty good, especially Llanfair PG! Though I did scroll through the comments and find that someone had corrected you on Machynlleth, so that aside, you did well! Ironically, the only one I have a quibble with isn't even Welsh: Shrewsbury! The question of whether to pronounce it 'Shroos-bury' or the perhaps posher--sounding 'Shrohs-bury' is often debated. Personally, I go for the latter. Cool that you're of Welsh descent, however distant it may be! I adore Wales. I studied Geography at Bangor University, right on the doorstep of Eryri (aka Snowdonia). One Saturday in my first year I spent the day with the trains. I took the bus from Bangor to Caernarfon, then the Welsh Highland Railway down to Porthmadog, then the Ffestiniog Railway to Blaenau Ffestiniog and then the train back to Bangor, changing at Llandudno Jn! That weekend the Ffestiniog was running its Victorian weekend, so it was really busy and my train was delayed, which meant that I missed my connection to Llandudno and had to wait another couple of hours! On the plus side I got to see all the day's remaining operations at Blaenau. I didn't get back to my flat in Bangor until around 8:30pm. I'd left for Caernarfon at 8:30am!

I eagerly await the Classy Whale meets The Railway With a Heart of Gold video. That could easily be an hour-long video with the amount of history on the line. One thing though; the outro card has to use the theme from The Railway With a Heart of Gold documentary, just like the Talyllyn Railway's KZbin channel does. You can't NOT do that tbh

Just a suggestion Caleb please disables KZbins automatic translation of video titles KZbin enables them by default. While it is intended to be good and inclusive, the translation often ends up dropping title information entirely or going the literal translation without respect for personal/proper names. The Automatic translation of the title also translates you mentioning your KZbin Username "Classy Whale" within the title. so now it says (in german) "Edler Wal geht nach Wales" with "Edler Wal" being the literal translation of Classy Whale. Edit: Maybe also disable the AI dubbing as sometimes the KZbin decides to launch the dubbed version instead.
