Claudio Abbado, Reinhold Friedrich, 'Brandenburg Concerto #2' (J. S. Bach)

Claudio Abbado (1933-2014) was an Italian conductor who was one of the leading conductors of his generation.
Reinhold Friedrich (1958) is a German trumpeter and university lecturer in Karlsruhe. He is considered one of the greatest classical trumpeters of all time.
They interpret Johann Sebastian Bach's 'Brandenburg Concerto #2 in F', BWV 1047. The 'Brandenburg Concertos' were a present to the Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt, Christian Ludwig, in 1721.
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was a German composer, virtuoso organist and harpsichordist, music educator, conductor and choirmaster. He's considered one of the greatest composers of all time.

he is considered as one of the greatest trumpet soloist…. honestly, I really think that there is not doubt that Reinhold put the benchmark so much higher on everything he ever touched - and Brandenburg 2 is the best example - this HARDEST PIECE EVER FOR TRUMPET is just his DNA - he playes it with such incredible elegance and easiness - all trumpet just adore Reinhold 😍😍😍🎺🎺🎺🤗🤗🤗🍀🍀🍀🥂🥂🥂

I am really impressed how this musicians cooperate. Some of them specialists in baroque music some play in modern symphony orchestra. It is so well done. Beautiful! I didn't hear this concerto for years and I am so happy to hear it again in this particular performance!

This has to be one of the greatest performances of this I have ever heard, by far!!! The way Reinhold plays that C picc trumpet (It looks like a Yamaha 9910, a C Picc made only in 1982) is just so enchanting.

I agree with you on the recording, but just for those who are interested, i am pretty sure, that it´s a Schilke piccolo. The valve caps and finger buttons give it away.

I am quite sure the piccolo trumpet was a Schilke C picc which is ideal for the Brandenburg.

To play this piece live takes a lot of skill way beyond just playing high notes. To then as an encore come back and play the 3rd Movement again with the little bonus of the last note up a fourth to what is written is impressive to say the least!

This is a very fine performance of the difficult trumpet part. (I once turned down an invitation to audition for principal trumpet of a professional orchestra because the first piece on the list was the 2nd Brandenburg, and I have never made it through it successfully!) It is a bit incongruous to have the valved pic alongside the period strings and blockflote, but he balances well with them despite the contrast in tonal brilliance. The oboe sounds like a modern instrument also, but I am not sure. I have no idea why he took the final note up the octave. It certainly detracts from any attempt at representing authenticity. I have great admiration for Herr Friedrich's trumpet playing, however.

The octave jump at the end of the encore is not that uncommon, I first heard Maurice André in the 90s doing that as well at a concert in Hamburg. Here Michala Petri also switched to the sopranino recorder in the encore, so the whole rendition was an interesting variation anyhow.

@@Kowabrass I did not ask whether it was common, I wondered why anyone would decide they knew better than Bach how his music should end. It is not a trumpet concerto accompanied by the other players!
