from a documentary where Arrau talks about his teacher Krause, and then here tells what Krause told him about Liszt (Krause was a student of Liszt).

soooo beautiful played the petrarca sonetto by mr.arrau. in the same broadcasting he also said that he used to develop further what liszt taught. he mentioned the persistant connection of hands and brain with the soul. these insightful thoughts of arrau become very clear listening to this liszt interpretation. he was so great,yes,indeed...

it was Alfred Cortot and Arthur Rubinstein who gave him the first prize in Geneve competition:::: Arrau was the last romantic. His deep understanding of music and his close contact with the piano makes him unique. He never went for sensation but for the essential. His direct contact through Krause with Liszt make his interpretations close to the composers Liszt and Beethoven, as Liszt studied with a pupil of Beethoven.... Krause heard Liszt playing Beethoven.....

An elderly professor at my school was a student's of Arrau, lucky chap had a 'pedagogical lineage' dating back to Beethoven, Thank you for uploading this. It's a wonderful, sensitive, human interpretation of a piece that's often marred by cold firewords or a maudlin tone. Arrau ftw.

(Krause discovered immediately that young Claudio was especially brainly wired for great future achievements). The musical wiring of this Master's brain, with millions of connections running all the way to his hands, to the tip of his fingers. And so, delivering the purity, the quality of his interpretations, with the Arrau special, magic touch. A touch polished by endless practice, thousands of hours of dedicated application. The kind of love and sacrifice through an entire lifetime that makes a human being a Master of his or her musical trade, the art that he prepares and delivers for us, the lucky listeners. We owe you the pleasure of your art, Mr Arrau, forever.

Arrau when young played with greater speed and color, perhaps? but i disagree with you 100%, Arrau was NEVER stiff when playing, if at all he was the most relaxed pianist when he played even the most difficult pieces. In old age Arrau was more preocupied with singing at the piano depth of tone and interpretation, and his recordings are a testimony. He had a weight techique which allowed him to play anything at any speed and any volume, effortless, this technique gets better with time/age

yes arrau dod get the modern technique of playing the piano from the liszt pupil Krause. the late Beethoven Chopin Liszt Schumann did push the piano technique and piano possibilities to new limits. Arraungot this heritage. And adopted it very well , better than most other pianists of his time. I only heard the late arrau live in concerts , sometimes great sometimes ill.His Beethovensonatarecital in Vienna was a miracle of inspiration and profound deep research of the meaning. Convincing

I sometimes prefer Arrau's more restrained approach to Liszt over Horowitz's, who tended to emphasize Liszt's showiness and theatricality (which certainly wasn't always out of place in Liszt!) Though I will say anyone who wants to hear fabulous Liszt playing should track down Horowitz's blazing 1932 account of the Sonata (though Arrau's very different approach to the piece, recorded about 1970 is marvellous).

yes, of course, i recorded it several years ago from ARTE-TV. Probably the best channel in Europe when it comes to culture & history. I have now a massive collection of documentaries that i'm trying to copy to dvd now. At this very moment, i also want to point out that i'm trying to post only those clips on KZbin which aren't available commercialy and which probably aren't broadcasted commonly.

@sprund2009 The recording is part of an interview, is just a complement on it, is just a documentary not a musical recording session, even so the profoundity and beauty of the performance is evident. Your opinion is full of passion but not unbiased thoughts. I suggest to you to read expert critics to have a balanced point of view.

I disagree with you compettly, Arraus technique was superior to horowotiz, in the sense that what ever speed (tempo) and volume he played was completly relaxed, whereaes horowtiz was always tense and rigid, nothing is what it looks like, FYI- both chopin and liszt require in their playing great delicacy and finesse and great power and passion,... the fact that chopin was physically ill and weak at the end of his life does not mean that his spirit was,
