I fear that if I buy a pasta machine that is used for modeling clay, the fimo will stick to it, can that happen? because this happens with my acrylic roller. Does it matter which pasta machine you use, whether one for noodle or especially for fimo?

Hi Farblich! It's not usual for clay to stick to the acrylic roller! If you work on a glossy ceramic tile, it will cause the clay to stick to the ceramic tile instead (then you can use a knife to remove it from the ceramic). I constantly switch from glossy to matte ceramic depending on when I want my clay to stick to the surface i'm working on. If you use a pasta machine, Fimo will most likely not stick to you machine since Fimo is a firmer clay. If anything, you'll have an easier time with the pasta machine not sticking to your clay than a roller. It doesn't matter what machine you use so long as the quality is good. I use a noodle machine, the brand, MARCATO Atlas 150 Pasta Machine and can put a link in the description if you're interested in getting the exact same one I have. Hope that helps!

Great tips and I like how you explain why issues like the rippling are occurring ,not just how to stop it.

I actually was looking for a video on pasta machine features to look for when using it for polymer clay. But this was very helpful, too. I guess they all have the same features...? After all the money I've spent on clay and tools, I don't know why I hesitate with buying a pasta maker. LOL! All I know is, yesterday, after conditioning and coloring my clay, I was exhausted! LOL! (I'm older and disabled, which is probably why I found it so hard.)

Sorry for the late reply! I hope you found what you needed! I think a good feature to look for is the number of dials so that you can get various thicknesses of flattened clay. I haven't looked at other models before, I just have the marcato 150 for years and haven't had to replace it. Goodluck on your clay adventures!

Hi Jen, I wanted to ask what causes sticky clay? you mentioned it in your video but didn't really touch on why it happens/how to avoid it/fix it. I am new to this world so your videos help so so much. Thank you!

Hi Gretel I find clay always gets sticky when the weather is hot.. sometimes it’s due to overworking the clay. Try leaching it by putting it on a piece of notepaper with another on top. You can put some weight on top eg a book. After about thirty minutes you’ll notice that the paper has oil marks and your clay should feel much more workable.

Joyce gave a great explanation! Just also wanted to add that different clay brands are prone to being more sticky than others. One of my favorites to work with is Kato because it never gets sticky on me. Premo is medium-sticky and Sculpey III is the stickiest.

what is a good brand pasta machine? Mine only allows up to a 3mm thickness.
@Jennifooclay
@Jennifooclay 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Linda, I use the Marcato Atlas 150, it has 10 settings, clay runs through super smooth and even - stainless steel is a plus. The largest setting (setting 0) comes to about 3mm max too which should be sufficient for most clay projects. If I need it thicker, id stack the 3mm sheets together depending on what I want to achieve. Hope that helps, if not, feel free to ask more questions - either myself or someone else should be able to answer :-)

What is better? Owning and using Pasta Machine or do it with your hands?
@Jennifooclay
@Jennifooclay 3 жыл бұрын
Hi My Life Box!! For me personally, pasta machine hands down! If you work with polymer clay on a weekly basis a pasta machine will save time when mixing colors of clay and instantly flattening your sheets of clay to the thickness you want. Also, techniques like skinner blending go much faster with a pasta machine.

i bought polymer clay but when I open it it's too hard and even i use o roller it crumbles. I tried baby oil and water, putting it in hot water, but it doesn't t work. if I buy a pasta machine, will it be easier to smooth? if I cut it into small pieces when i first open it, will it crumbles again or make it smoother?

Hi Hatice! Sorry to hear the about the clay misbehaving and being difficult! May I ask what brand you are using? I would recommend cutting it into thin slices & smooshing it with the warmth of your hands until it is squishy. Yes, a pasta machine will help a lot, clay might still crumble, but makes the conditioning process faster. However, some clays may be really old and just will take a lot of work to condition especially if you have cool hands. Brands like Sculpey Premo are really easy to condition. Kato is firmer, and Fimo is the most crumbly (from my experience). Overtime, I found my most go-to favorite way of dealing with crumbly clay is to mix a tiny bit of Sculpey III translucent into the crumbly clay and it seems to hold everything together nicely :-) but don't go too crazy with Sculpey III (it's one of the weaker clays, but it's the stickiest - but great to have in your arsenal to fix difficult crumbly clay).

@@Jennifooclay thanks for answering 😊 I use cernit. I will buy a pasta machine :)) the time the last time I condition a clay was 18 minutes :(( i don't use translucent clay because I don t wanna change the colour. it doesn't make too much change but I want protect the tone :)) I use water to make it softer, instead of baby oil. Does it make a disadvantage like breaking easily after baking or smth?
@Jennifooclay
@Jennifooclay 2 жыл бұрын
No problem Hatice! Nice, Cernit is so lovely and has so many great color selections. I haven't personally tried mixing water with Cernit, but I read that it can weaken the finish product. But also, polymer clay being oil based shouldn't mix well with water, and moisture in the clay will cause bubbling during the baking process. Enjoy your new pasta machine!! I'm sure you'll make some pretty amazing things with Cernit clay :-) !
