Here in the US I never heard of or saw this series or books in 1976. The plot and characters were so much richer than the ones we usually see. I was captivated by Peter McEnery's stellar performance. Thank you very much for offering this to us. From Florida on one of our rare overcast days.

A superb series ... well acted by all, esp McEnery and Redman. And a first-rate cautionary tale about all family relationships.

Thank you again for this great series, with a fitting last episode that does justice to Bennett's insight into character. Peter McEnery is magnificent in this role of a lifetime.

What a wonderful series, I enjoyed every minute of it, so true to life, just magnificent. Thank you. Can't help feeling sorry for Maggie having to share a room with her niece and at the mercy of those two hypocrites the Benbows.

This has got to be one of the forgotten gems, an underrated series on KZbin. The production, all around, is terrific.

Disappointing that the narcissist didn't get any comeuppance, but then they never do. Edwin convinced himself he was 'winning' by letting her have her way but really he was an enabler, weak from what he endured with his father and perpetuated in his marriage.

Holy mackerel! Let me get this straight: Edwin earns all the money and takes all the business risks ... yet he cannot choose where he spends Christmas, doesn't have a say where he will live, has no vote in hiring/firing household help, is not consulted on major decisions in his home. Hmmm ... Hilda has him on a very short leash indeed.

Hilda really deceives herself into believing that she isn't after money! She's so exasperating!

This TV series of 26 episodes is amazing for its fidelity to the 3 books. It is like the The Forsyte Saga of 1967 in that regard--a TV series that is very accurate when it comes to the text, very faithful to what the author wrote (any little changes are justified or understandable for the sake of TV adaptation). The writers of this Clayhanger TV series really followed the books closely, and in recent decades such commitment has been absent with film adaptations (in modern times, TV writers make up new things that the author never wrote or intended--annoying). The ending of the Clayhanger saga (I refer to the 3 books as well as to the TV series) makes sense: Edwin realizes he needs Hilda to shake up his life, to add spice, to introduce novelty. If it were not for Hilda's rash and sudden decisions about changing their lifestyles every year or two, Edwin would end up like his cruel and stale father (Darius) or like the dull Benbows--a horrible life of routine, convention, suffocation. To be married to Hilda can be exasperating, but Edwin needs Hilda's spark and change and confrontation. Without Hilda, Edwin would be living in a dead world (as Maggie does). The actress portraying Hilda is good at conveying an irritating person. D. H. Lawrence builds upon what Arnold Bennett explores in the 3 novels.

This cant be the ending is it? If it is its really disappointing i was hoping Hilda would have died of influenza or consumption or some other Victorian illness.

Just finished! What did everyone think of the ending? How did you interpret it?

Initially I agreed that Hilda was miscast and far too old for the part but on reflection I think that as her character aged she was excellent - a younger woman would never have been able to carry off the older, selfish, greedy, rude, manipulative Hilda.

Hilda what a horror, not an uplifting series for me
