I absolutely loved this. I watched one of Lang Lang's Master classes in California, at the Weill Hall where he taught 100 children and is was wonderful. Clayton Stephenson has great talent and Lang Lang is amazing. I wish you both all the best :) Love from Anna C.

Yes, Lang Lang gave a Masterclass to 101 children, duets on 50 kwyboard and Lang Lang on his Steinway piano, in a small town with a new symphony hall near where we live. That video is on my Channel Anna C. It was fascinating to watch :) Anna.

You are an unbeliavable talent, Maestro Stephenson! Your playing is a joy already - but happy to see that you are seeking further instruction from a pianist with such a distinct individual style as Lang Lang. Liszt's music clearly suits you perfectly - I hope that you will keep adding more and more of his pieces to your repertoire! Thank you for your music, Sir!

Great to watch. In this standard of masterclass a virtuoso technique is essential and also an excellent memory. Clayton is a very gifted pianist and able to take on board all Lang Lang's suggestions as to performance. A re-creative performance needs a secure and brilliant technique able to forget about notes and lift the music off the page.

I enjoyed this very much. Lang Langs a great teacher. It's interesting that Lang Lang (and most other pianists) want to play the opening very dryly when Liszt's pedal markings say otherwise. It does have to be scary though.
@ErkaaJ
@ErkaaJ 5 жыл бұрын
Francis Squire I think it's because the pedal in 19th century was dryer than it is today. I've heard this recommended before to not take the pedalling to stringently.

I know that part where the notes D-C#, C#-F#, C-B, B-E, Bb-A in octaves in the bass represent Mephisto stamping with his big feet to create an earthquake in his own depiction of hell, to scare a lot of people. Just my imagination. And most of the grace notes in the Liszt masterpiece represent the "sprites of fire in the inferno", alluding to the Nikolaus Lenau's version of the Goethe's Faust legend. The opening measures, repeated, represent Mephisto trying to do "accordatura" on his violin during this macabre waltz. Aka tuning. Only Liszt's "Robert le Diable, Valse Infernale" and "Scherzo and March" can equally set off this explosive extroversion of diabolic music elements as the First Mephisto Waltz.

@gabrielbrewster107
@gabrielbrewster107 6 жыл бұрын
TROLL I'm an amateur pianist. I dont think their is a "right way". There is an enjoyable way, shared by like minded people. And there is the way that reflects the opinions of people respected (Maestros, virtuosi, music phds, professors and professional musicians). Lang Lang was able to have a successful career because of that his opinion is highly valued. And hopefully what he thinks and teaches increases the enjoyability of the music or reflects the intentions of the composer.

That which enhances the character of the piece is often the correct one. For instance, Lang Lang and others leave out the pedal in the beginning, which I assume is to make the intro scarier, which is in character.

The best masterclass I ever attended was with Leon Fleisher. One of my buddies performed the first movement of Beethoven's "Les Adieux" Sonata. Fleisher let him play the whole movement, but after that he immediately went back to the first few bars of the piece and they never made it past the first two bars. Fleisher was wanting to hear several different possibilities for approaching that section and he wanted to see if this young guy had the imagination to conceive of more than one-or-two ways to interpret it. At the end, Fleisher said that Schnabel had done the very same thing to him in one of their first lessons.
